Abstract

Käesoleva väitekirja üheks eesmärgiks on kindlaks teha Tartu ülikooli hoonestuse väljaehitamise ideelised allikad, arvestades Euroopa valgustusajastu teadusloo konteksti.
Among the goals of the thesis is the task to determine the ideological sources of the principles for the construction of the architectural ensemble of the University of Tartu, considering the context of the European Enlightenment era science history. The research points out the possible ways of communication for the distribution of the European Enlightenment ideas, viz. how and by whom those ideas reached our area and in what extent they were locally realized. It is claimed in the thesis that concerning the process of the elaboration of the architectural conception of the University edifices the role of Georges-Frédéric Parrot, the first Rector of the University, should be emphasized together with that of J. W. Krause. Professor G.-F. Parrot excelled as a scientist and an administrator as well as a promoter and generator of the leading Enlightenment scientific and educational ideas, thus essentially influencing the formation of the University ensemble. In the 18th century, the Enlightenment movement paid special attention to the improvement of the living environment for all social strata in towns as well as in the country. To promote the application of these ideas, the Chair of Economics, Technology, Forestry and Architecture was established at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University. Among the goals of this research is to present an overview of the programme and activity of the Chair, held initially by Professor J. W. Krause in 1803–1828. The construction activity in the urban space of Tartu of the early 19th century was carried out in the framework of the requirements of the model façades established in the Russian Empire by Alexander I. The earlier treatments of architectural history in Estonia interpret those requirements as an intervention of the central government of the Empire in the local construction traditions, and the officially sanctioned model façades have been characterized as having a low artistic value. However, it is revealed by the present research that the ideas of the leading British and French architects served as a basis for those model façades. Thus, the idea of model façades followed the all-European Enlightenment principles of town construction.
