Abstract

Väitekirja materjaliks on ajaloolise Võrumaa kohanimede sünkrooniline kogu, mille autor on kogunud välitööl aastatel 1995–2003 ja mis kaardiga seotud andmebaasina sisaldab rohkem kui 23 000 nimega kohta. Enamlevinud nimeosade analüüs selgitab lõunaeesti keeles tekkinud kohanimistu tüpoloogiat, kuid annab ka aluse paljude hämardumise piiril olevate kohanimede sõnavaralise sisu ja tekkemotiivi selgitamiseks. Nimeosade eristamise aluseks on süntaktilis-semantiline struktuurimudel, mida pole Eesti kohanimede uurimisel varem täiel määral rakendatud. The subject matter of dissertation is the synchronic stock of toponyms in historical Võrumaa. It has been collected by the author in the fieldwork of 1995-2003 and has a database linked to the map with more than 23,000 entries. The analysis of the most frequent name elements explains the typology of toponymicon which has formed in South Estonian, but also provides a foundation to clarify the lexical content and the naming principle of toponyms on the verge of becoming opaque. The syntactic-semantic model, which has not been fully implemented in the study of Estonian toponyms earlier, serves as a basis of the differentiation of name elements. Given the novelty of approach, the thesis includes a longer introductory chapter, where the development of the Finnish school of synchronic toponomastics is studied and corresponding matches to the terms of the syntactic-semantic structural model are offered in Estonian. The review of categorical distribution of objects recorded in the stock of names opens the analytical section of the thesis. Then the closer look on 30 most frequent generics is given. In the analysis of specific parts all attributes and names with one element, which occur at least 14 times in Võrumaa, are discussed. Those specific parts, which cover a third of all entries, are divided into 12 lexical-semantic classes. In the voluminous study of attributes, central naming principles, which have coupled with one or another attribute, are also explained. For example, the popularity of animal names among personal proper names underlies the sizeable occurrence of animal names in settlement names. In addition there is name giving by verbal analogy and the transformation of linguistically opaque names. Yet the latter name-giving can be explained in detail with diachronic research. In the analysis of the most frequent toponyms, the spread of some names, common in Võrumaa, is traced all over Estonia. The distribution maps demonstrate how the spread of the same or a lexically close name is rarely limited to the South Estonian language area, but it is hardly ever homogenously all-Estonian. The typical distribution pattern reaches across the border of South Estonian but disappears futher off. Those combinations, which by the vocabulary could occur everywhere in the Estonian language area, follow the same pattern. The treatment of local name systems in the final part of the thesis outlines the most important factors, which determine the name system in linguistically rather homogenous Võrumaa.
