Approach to a Poem
The frame of mind in which you approach a poem is most important. Now that you know the purpose of a poet, you would not come to a poem expecting to find information or explanations. On the other hand, you would not expect a poem to be just a rhymed jingle. You will be prepared to find a new idea, or an old idea stated in a refreshing new way. And you may look for an appeal to your emotions; that is, you may expect your feelings to be aroused.
Since rhythm is an important element in most poetry, you will want to discover the pattern of rhythm as early as you can. You might try reading the first two or three lines to get the feeling of it. Then you can go back and read the poem through for its meaning.
