Transitive and intransitive verbs
When using verbs of movement it is important to know whether they are :
- transitive — needing an object (shown in the dictionary with a "T")
- intransitive — used without an object (shown in the dictionary with an "I").
So, the following verbs are transitive and need an object:
cut, reduce, raise, lower
We cut the budget.
The banks have raised their interest rates twice this year.
The company reduced the number of employees.
After an intransitive verb we cannot put a direct object:
Our turnover rose last year, but our profits dropped.
The following words are intransitive:
rise, grow, go up/down, be up/down, fall, decline, collapse, slump
Costs went down/ fell/ declined.
Many verbs can be used both with and without objects. The following words are both, transitive and intransitive:
increase, decrease, extend, expand, drop
