This is a copy of my dissertation edited by myself. The dissertation was admitted on October 29, 2001 by the Council of the Department of Physics, University of Tartu, and will be published in the end of November 2001 by the Tartu University Press in the series of Dissertationes Geophysicales Universitatis Tartuensis (ISSN 1406–0310; ISBN 9985–56–612–2). The text is converted into pdf-files according to the chapters of the dissertation. The pdf-files have been optimized for printing on A4 or letter size sheets (two original pages in one sheet). The files are accessible from the links in the table below, as well as from the links in Table of Content. The pdf-files are rather long. It is recommended to download all files and save them in a common folder.
