The present study guide is the study material for structural linguistic analysis of poetic texts. It introduces the main notions of English versification and presents an outline of poetic text analysis which guides students of English in their independent work on structural linguistic analysis of poetic texts. The study guide will require approximately 6 hours of independent work and will enable students:

to understand key concepts of English versification
to reveal principles of poet’s craft at phonetic, lexical, syntactic levels
to identify poetic patterns, rhyme and rhythm
to learn steps of poetic text analysis by following an example text analysis
to perform poetic text analysis and check its correctness
