Abstract

Description

The bachelor thesis «The covering of Iraqi conflict in Postimees: comparative analysis of three periods of conflict» discusses the influences, that international newsflow and other aspects, like mediaworkers’ choices has on the newspaper. The empirical material of the study is based on the Estonias’ leadind daily Postimees. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse, if the covering that Postimees offers to its’ audience is biased or not – do there dominate the voices of the coalition (USA and its supporters) or not. The theoretical part of the thesis inables ust o frame these factors that have influence on the coverage of Iraqi War in the Postimees. I used different theories, because only one does not give enouhg and satisfactory basis to this thesis. So, there for I used the theory of polittical, economical and technological influences on international news flow (Larson, 1994); the media imperialism theory (Hachen, 1992; McQuail, 2000), the theories of public interest, media accountability (McQuail, 2000) and agenda setting (McQuail, 2000). Also I based my analysis on the theorie that any media worker has his/her own influence to media texts, because their decisiond are influenced by their socicultural backgrounds (McQuail, 2000) and media routines (Shoemaker & Reese, 1991). The method of the thesis is contentanalys, more specifically text-analyse. Also, to explain the finding, I interviewed the workers from Postimees, to find out, how and why they make the deciosions they do. This helped me to understand and explain the aspects that ifluence media texts in Postimees, but wich are hidden from the reader. It became evident from the researh that Postimees is very dependent of the international news flow, because they have little resources (money and workers) of their own to copete with the international media companies and news agencies. That is the reason why jornalists at Postimees present more coalition politicians’ and army officials’ words and opinions to their readers. So, with this research we can say that Postimees is a bit biased, concerned with the war in Iraq.
