Abstract

Description

Present Bachelor Paper’s thesis is “The Gymnasists expectations to radioprogram, regarding Radio 2” The first aim of the paper was to research which kind of the listeners the age of 15 – 20 youngsters are, what kind of expectations they have towards to the program Radio 2. The second purpose of the paper was to research the musical preferences of the students from the different regional schools and to investigate if they know the musical genres. The third aim was to interview the heads of the program, in order to know which kind of expectations they have towards the Radio 2 and are they similar to the students preferences. The first method for evaluating was questionary, which was filled by the 177 students from the four different Estonian schools: Gymnasium of Noarootsi, Lyceum of Tartu Descartes; Gymnasium of Järveotsa (Tallinn) and The Elementary School of Kalamaja (Tallinn). The second method was the students experimental hearing of the musical pieces. The number of the musical examples were 45, and each one of them lasted about 20 seconds. Also the questionary analysed if there were connection with knowing musical pieces and musical genres. The third method were the interviews with Estonian Radio program manager Sulev Valner and with head of the Radio 2, Heidy Purga. For evaluating the results I also used the electronic database on results of radio listening quantitative survey of Survey Company TNS Emor and the opinion surveys carried out by the Survey Research Centre Faktum. In my paper I gave a brief survey on how Radio 2 was created, on it’s original objectives, changes in the programme over the times and station’s position on the market based on the share. I described the 2004 reform’s process and focused on the programme of new Radio 2, comparing the changes in the programming and on the results they brought along. Proceeding from results of the 2005 Opinion Survey on the expectations aimed at Radio 2 and their realization in comparison with earlier periods, it has become clear that Estonian Radio has undertook a difficult task when reforming Radio 2. Proceeding from the public service obligations, Radio 2 must fulfil factors of information’s (news, current affairs) quickness and trustworthiness, journalistic independence and professionalism of presenters on the level of audience’s expectations. At the same time the age group of 15 to 29 years wants to listen to the music suitable for them, entertainment, music request programmes and they don’t want to listen to the speech programmes and radio dramas-readings. The key of the program policy is the fact, that Radio 2 is the public radio and regarding to that it has to be done professionally, there has to be quality and content. In order to have the maximum young audience, it doesn’t mean the main solution in conveying of program is entertainment and superficialty. The young people, the age of the 15 to 20 also value the quality, new information and themes with high content, but their own way. Making the good and professional public radio to the youngsters, it greatly depends on how the information is produced and formatted. One should also point out that one year is not enough to evaluate the final changes of the program of the Radio 2, as the formatting of the new strong team requires more time and the audience needs to get accustomed to the changes.
