Abstract
Description
The aim of this Bachelors thesis (Representation of Gender in the column Tegijad in the
weekly Eesti Ekspress) is to analyze the construction of gender in the column Tegijad in the
weekly Eesti Ekspress. The main criteria for analyzing were the elements and judgments
given to the persons.
The aim was to find out how many of the stories were written about females; who are chosen
to be portrayed, how are the persons being characterized and what kind of discourses can be
found in the texts.
The texts of the column Tegijad in the year 2006 were analyzed. A general analysis was done
on all the texts and a more thorough on all the texts written of women (9) and on the same
amount of randomly chosen articles about men. Texts were analyzed by content and
discourse analysis. Two systems of categories were compiled for the content analysis.
The study showed that the construction of gender in the Tegijad column stories pursues the
following tendencies. Men are portrayed more often than women. And women are usually
portrayed in their personal or home environment. Men were portrayed as successful and in
their working environment. Interesting is that the themes of reasons for writing about a female
person were often negative.
In discourse analysis the three stages of the Fairclough method were followed. The study
showed that men and women are still portrayed through discourses that are maintaining the
old stereotypes. Women are seen as mothers and are not so smart. Men on the other hand are
seen as intelligent and important, with great values. Still in the texts about women there were
two so to say new discourses – the „warriors” and the „self-willed woman’s”.
