Interpretation of photos and captions through social networking website Orkut.com This bachelor thesis focuses on analysing the photos and their captions of social networking website (SNS) Orkut.com. While most research studies done on SNS self presentation focus on the photo alone, this one also takes into consideration the extra bit of info added underneath the photo. The aim of this thesis is to see whether the captions given to the photos help to present the person or activity on the photo in a somehow different way to that of a photo alone. Empirical data was collected through interviewing 10 people, considering that they are registered users of Orkut.com and have uploaded photos on their user account. The interview consisted of four main topics. In the last part, the interviewees were asked to analyse three photos before and after revealing them the real caption added by the owner of the photo. All research questions that were set up in the beginning of the work found their answers. Main findings were, that people mostly read the captions under the photos, when the meaning of the photo is unclear to them. It also appeared, that people don’t read the captions at all, when the owner of the photo is a stranger. When asked about what kind of captions the interviewees write under their own photos, the answer was, that they try whenever as possible to write something funny and witty. Also, those photos with a witty caption found better reception. All those interviewed said they are thinking that the photos they have uploaded of themselves and captions written under them, represent them from a positive point of view. On their own photos, people want to show some important events, people or hobbies. Very important factor, when uploading a photo was considered, that it transmits the emotions of the particular moment to the viewer.
