Abstract

Description

The aim of the bachelor thesis “Ethicl conflicts in the gameshow „The Moment of Truth“ and their representation in Estonian media“ was to find out if and how the representations of ethical conflicts in this gameshow conform to the vision and studies of media scholars. In a more narrow plan, the aim of this thesis was to find the ethical dilemmas this gameshow has brought up, to describe the argumentation about Estonian „The Moment of Truth“. The used method, for this thesis is argumentation analysis. The study found out that there is no discussion about ethics or about the show at all, where the author would objectively try to analyse the show’s entertaining, public and social aspects. From this thesis it can be concluded that the biggest attention has been on the different participants in this show (players, agents etc.) and their possible value judgement. It is remarkable that all these evaluations have been given by the authors‘ own principles and value judgements. There has not arose any actual discussion about values. Though there has not arose any discussion, the authors‘ concerns are about the same as the concerns of the media scholars and journalists around the world – the deviation of morality, the ethics of producers and the question about private and public sphere. The only and also the biggest difference was that in the analysed representations the focus was on people and the important discussion was very shallow and too emotional. While examining this thesis a series of additional themes and topics arose, for example, why was the analysis in Estonian media that shallow. This proves that this branch of study – the ethical conflicts arising from reality television – should be furter investigated.
