dc.description.abstractThe aim of this thesis is to give a brief overview on the subject of media literacy and media competence and to create a learning kit for paramilitary youth organisation Noorte Kotkaste Järva Malev. Thesis consists of the theoretical overview on the subject of media literacy and its imprtance, non-formal education and opportunities in Estonian, short introductions of the paramilitary organisation Kaitseliit and its youth organisation Noored Kotkad and a short learning kit about media literacy to Noorte Kotkaste Järva Malev. In Estonia, media education is considered as one of the disciplines implimented in the cross-curricular principle. There are minimal legal basis for developing media education and the preconditions for teaching media, media usage of the teachers and pupils and the notion of media usage of the pupils, are fulfilled. But the teachers are not ready to teach media, because there are not so many resources and the teacher-training considering media education is poor. Teachers are not aware of the need and opportunities of teaching media, they don’t know how to use constructivist teaching methods. As the overloaded curriculum and the teachers insufficiency to teach media are considered, there must be another way to teach children about media literacy, like in the matter of non-formal education and coeducation with Noored Kotkad. The the purpose of the learning kit on media literacy in Noorte Kotkaste Järva Malev is to teach the members of this organisation to use media consiously and to teach them to understand and analyze the media-created messages. The course consists of practical exersizes to help understanding the process of media and media-created reality and to be able to create and receive different types of media messages. A very big part of this course is discussions and feed-back from the pupils. This thesis is the underlying part of my future media educational work with the members of paramilitary youth organisation Noored Kotkad, to improve the learning kit and to take it to a higher level in the organisation. I hope to create a active learning kit for the whole organistation, not only the part, that I’m connected the most – Noorte Kotkaste Järva Malev.en
