Abstract

Ethical Dilemmas of a Journalist in the Cultural Industry. This master's thesis is examining ethical dilemmas in communication of a media-educated journalist producing a reality-show. This paper raises questions whose duty is to care about universal values in communication ethics like human dignity and to what extent one holds the responsibility for creating the public image of the participants of reality-show. The method of this thesis is autoetnography which is the best way to reach author's personal dilemmas. Autoetnography allows researchers to collect the data in ways that may not be possible with other research methods. Editor in journalism has chance to use collective memory and long-lasting experience in addition of code of ethics for solving moral dilemmas. The analysis reveals that reality producer is often left without any external advice and frequently has to solve dilemmas by himself, depending on his personal moral values and experience. At the same time producer possesses a substantial degree of moral responsibility for creating public image and preserving human dignity for the reality-show participants. Thus it is important to guide producer through the maze of values. It is also important for producer to own ability to recognize and solve ethical dilemmas. To resolve the dilemmas, reality producer has to choose loyalties every day. One of the most important factors in producer's everyday job is the loyalty – or absence of loyalty – to employer. Consequently, it is necessary to cultivate the virtue of analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas among leaders of production companies. It will create the knowing about professional skills for coaching future reality producers. In conclusion, it's important to collect personal empirical experience when developing towards being a professional reality producer. Just as important is the contribution of organisation clarifying the necessity of knowing about moral values and principles.
