Abstract

The aim of the present BA thesis: „Facebook as a virtual family photo album“ is to analyse what are interviewees practices of displaying family photos, what kind of family photos they upload, what are the expectations they have of the feedback. The keywords of this thesis are: The family as an institution, mapping traditions of family photos, family photo album, social networks as the enviroment for interaction and uploading photos and finally privacy. The empirical analysis of the thesis is based on 13 in-depth oral interviews with users of Facebook, who upload family photos to their Facebook account. Sample preparation was based on a strategy of the homogeneous sample, the selection policy was that the interviewees account includes family photos. Restrictions which relate to age or sex, is not set. The results of study showed that the incentive for uploading photos were family and friends and they were also the audience of family photos for whom the photographs were uploaded. For interviewees was very important to share their photos with family and friends, because they wanted to maintain contact with them. Most frequently the photos were added once a week and it depended mostly on what had occurred in the meantime (birthdays, some kind of events). The maximum amount of family pictures they added were 10 at once. Common practice is to exchange photos once during two or three months. Without exception, all interviewees restrict access to their family photographs and only friends can see their photos. Mostly it is because family photos are too private and personal to share with others. Interviewees are generally aware of the fact that Facebook retains all photos even after deleting. Family members are generally aware of the fact that they are exhibited on Facebook, but sometimes the interviewee decide alone what kind of photos to load and what kind of not. All interviewees, except one, had a paber family photo album. Before the virtual album of Facebook they used the paper album more often, but now, some of them do not add any more family photos to the paper album. They pointed out that virtual album is more preferred – it is faster, convenient, for free and available for friends and family all the time. Mostly exhibited photographs of children, because they always look cute and beautiful to look at. Much less are depicted on the photos interviewee himself, as she/he usually shoots. Interviewees never exhibit kids without clothes and funerals in their virtual album. Improperly considered photos, which would give an incentive to consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes. Interviewees were interested in feedback to their family photos, but it was not the main. The most they loved commentary, also the like was rated.
