Abstract

Studies show that not all graduates of teacher education programs start working as teachers and even if they start, many of them quit soon. Teacher identity has been found to be an important factor influencing teachers’ commitment and motivation. Therefore, teacher education should support student teachers developing their teacher identity: finding the balance between themselves as a person and as a teacher. The aim of this dissertation was to explore teacher identity and its development in different types of pre-service teacher education programs (primary teacher and subject teacher) through student teachers’ understanding of the teacher’s role, oneself and the tensions that they experience during studies. Results show that student teachers enter teacher education with prior understanding of teacher’s role that tends to be narrow and idealistic, but broadens during studies. Student teachers differ in terms of how they perceive teachers’ role and associated ideals. Subject teachers tend to view the teacher’s role as more subject-oriented than primary teachers. It is especially teaching practice where students start to reflect on themselves as teachers, their teacher identity. Teaching practice also provokes tensions, worries and fears in relation to oneself and the teaching profession. Student teachers from different types of programs differ in terms of how they experience tensions that in turn are connected to how they perceive the teacher’s role. Experiencing tensions that arise when student teachers conceive their personal characteristics as different from what the teacher’s role requires, or when the teacher’s role is experienced as too complex and time-consuming, are found to be difficult to resolve. To support the development of teacher identity and to leave time for resolving tensions, teaching practice should start as early as possible in the program. Also, more emphasis should be put on developing a complex understanding of the teacher’s role (teacher as a subject, didactics expert, and pedagogue) from the beginning of studies. Gradually growing into the profession should be supported more in teacher education, especially through offering students more time to reflect on their experiences. Student teachers have to be aware that becoming a teacher requires commitment and time.
