Abstract
Description
This bachelor thesis studies the representation of desirable life in Estonian largest daily
newspaper´s Postimees weekend supplement called Arter.
The author uses qualitative analysis to find dominating discourses of desirable and not
desirable life as well as the similarities and differences between the representation of
journalists and interviewees.
In addition, content analysis is used to find the values desired by the interviewees and their
friends, relatives or colleagues who were asked by the journalist to characterize the
interviewee.
The analysis showed that media represents people trough their social role and represents
social effort as the dominating value. At the same time, the interviewees say that they would
like to spend more time with their family or that they have postponed starting a family and
committed to work.
The friends, relatives and colleagues who were asked to characterize the interviewees equally
value proffesionalism (social role) and being a good person (individual role).
The following quote from one lead is a good example of the dominating representation:
“Peep Vain is a model of new era´s people in Estonia. His keywords are work, work, success,
development, work, cheerfulness and success (Valme 2005a:6).
The analysis also showed that one of the most negative values represented is the society in
general. It was characterized as being intolerant, hostile, superficial, career-oriented and not
caring about nature.
One has to keep in mind that the results of this paper may not be applicable to the media in
general and the results may be characteristic of a certain era.
