In my Bachelor’s Thesis, “The Representation of depictive and applied art in the Media
– the Case of Eesti Päevaleht Newspaper”, I examined the representation of art in the
print media. To do this, I conducted an empirical study with the aim to find out which
kind of art areas are represented in the media, how they are represented, which themes,
meanings and context they relate to.
The hypothesis of my thesis paper is that the representation of art in the media is, as a
rule, one sided. Art critics use terminology, which is hard to understand for regular
reader.
Only art critics and scientist can have a word in media about art and usual readers don’t
have a say in this matter. Only the same artist and art galleries are reverberated.
To find answers to these questions I conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis of
texts. With the quantitative analysis I graphed which art areas are represented, the focus
of media attention and the cultural meaning of the text. I carried out the qualitative
analysis using the Grounded Theory method. I examined the texts to find out meanings
that media presented to art, ideology tied to that and attitudes.
My hypothesis founded corroboration by qualitative analysis which revealed that the
media has a tendency toward creating one sided images when it comes to art. The main
focus of media attention is to oil paint. Although media is very one sided my hypothesis
about galleries and artist did not found approval. Namely no artist or art gallery was
pinned out, except KUMU, which is the Estonian Art Gallery.
