Abstract

„The approach to citizenship topics in Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees during 2002 and 2008“ This bachelor thesis studied the topic using online-versions of two most popular daily newspapers in Estonia – Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees. There were altogether 364 articles in the research, which 161 were published in 2002 and 203 in 2008. The analysis was made using combined contentanalysis. The first part of it was made using quantitative content analysis and was divided into three sections. First two reflected the topic in both periods, third section was used to compare the two. Most of the articles belonged to the news genre, additionally quite a lot opinions were published. Mainly they focused on integration to Estonia and reflected the cititzenship as an institution. As the citizenship topic in Estonia is emotionally connected to the annexation by the Soviet Union, there were only some articles with positive content as expected. Most articles were with rather or clearly negative content. Articles with neutral or balanced content were also quite common, but not as much as negative ones. The general minority was mostly represented as characters in the articles. Although in this category they were behind individuals in 2002. From the majority the most popular characters were Estonia and its governmental institutions. The category of authors of the arguments is somewhat connected with the character category. It should be mentioned that the authors of the opinion articles were included in this category. The discussion was mostly between individuals from the minority and Estonian governmental institutions. The second part of this thesis analyzed the opinion articles using the qualitative content analysis. The results showed that most topics are connected with the integration programme. But this is only a fascade – most problems are there on the ethnical level and are deeply connected with occupation period. This research met its objectives by studying the citizenship topics in the selected newspapers. This topic is vital in 2011 and will also be at least in the next decade.
