Abstract

The aim of this Bachelor`s thesis, entitled „Reflection of the changeover to the Euro in Estonian and Russian Delfi at the beginning of 2011―, is to analyse the reflection of the changeover to the Euro in Estonian and Russian media. The study is based on the news articles that were written straight after the changeover to the Euro from the 1st of January 2011 to the 31st of March 2011. The first part of the thesis describes empirical and theoretical starting points: brief overview about various theories of the impact of media, description of the agenda setting, the framing and the spiral of silence. It also consists an overview of previously conducted studies about Russian and Estonian media, and attitudes towards the euro. The second part of the thesis explains and justifies methods and selection of the thesis. The used method was content analysis. The third part presents the results and the fourth part consists of discussion and conclusions. The study shows that in Estonian and Russian media the changeover to the euro was not directly evaluated as a positive, negative or neutral event. Only five percentages of articles were given negative evaluation, in both medias. The biggest difference between Estonian and Russian media, is in the the topics that they cover. Russian media is focusing more on covering topics that are meant for regular people but Estonian media also focuses on covering topics for entrepreneurs. In Estonian media there are also more articles about foreign policy. In Estonian Delfi the spokesmen of media are mostly from the business sector, also the bank's representatives and politicians. In Russian Delfi however, the spokesmen are usually form the third sector. The authors of articles are very similar to Russian and Estonian media and in most cases they are not named and the articles are published under the name of editorial board.
