Abstract

„THE COVERING OF YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS IN ESTONIAN PUBLISHING PRESS EXAMPLED BY THE „POSTIMEES” The aim on this thesis was to map the publishing situation of youth organizations in Estonian publishing press. The author wanted to find out the capacity and frequency of the youth organizations media covering, the themes of the articles covering the youth organizations, the organizations that get the most covering, use of spokespersons in articles and media’s judgments about the themes of the articles and about the youth organizations. .For accomplishing all these purposes the author raised 4 research questions blocks. For the authors selection was all articles published in Estonian newspaper Postimees printal version in April, May, June, August, October, December of 2005 and 2010. The articles about youth organizations that matched the criteria were finally 89. For method author used both quantitative and qualitative content analysis methods. In the theoretical chapter the author made overview about the youth organizations as a part of citizen society, about the youth activity and politics in Estonia, about the working principles of youth organizations and about the youth organizations in Estonian media. First the author researched how often and in which capacity the national newspaper is covering the youth organizations. From the analysis turned out that in 2005 were printed 49 articles that covered the youth organizations and in 2010 there were 40 articles. Also turned out that the number of full news stories were remained the same both in 2005 and 2010 but in 2010 there were more opinion articles and other genres. Second the author researched themes related the most with youth organizations in publishing media, which are the problems that are pointed out about the youth organizations and which are the problems that youth organizations themselves point out the most. Turned out that in 2005 most articles covering the youth organizations were written about other themes than economy, education, politics, social problems and national defense. In 2010 the most articles covering youth organizations were written about the education (17 articles from 40 total). Also turned out that most of the problems, which were brought out about the youth organizations, were only about the concrete organizations, but not about the wider problems of society. But the youth organizations themselves brought out the problems about the themes that they were part of and also themes that were wider in society. For third the author researched the organizations that get the most covering and the use of spokespersons in articles. It turned out that in 2005 and 2010 together got most media covering Estonian School Student Councils' Union (13 articles) and Federation of Estonian Student Unions (9 articles). If author analyzed articles where were asked or stated the opinion of the youth organizations, it turned out that in 2005 in most of articles the youth organizations were only mentioned, but in 2010 the mention the youth organizations were equal of quoting the youth organizations. If the author looked the position of the spokespersons then it turned out that in 2005 the most cases there weren’t any spokesperson at all (34 articles from 49 total there weren’t any spokespersons). And if there were then they were board leaders or any other place on top of the organization. In 2010 there were more covering of the spokespersons and in most of the cases they were also leaders of the organizations (in 16 articles from 40 total). Finally researching the media’s judgments towards the acts and comments of the youth organizations and about the themes of articles covering the youth organizations, turned out that in most of the cases the media’s judgments didn’t accured or weren’t noticeable. Even when media gave any judgments, then they were balanced and neutral. For conclusion the research filled its purposes of giving the wider picture about the situation of covering the youth organizations in Estonian publishing press. But still should be a deeper research about the results of this work. The empirical material should be a little wider (there should be also another year analyzed for addition) and there should be a deeper qualitative analyze about the results.
