Füüsika instituutIn this work, the effects of atomic oxygen on four different types of materials were investigated: Kapton (polyimide), carbon fibre reinforced polymer, printed circuit board and polyethylene infrared window. The materials to be tested had been previously tested at the European Space Agency's Low Earth Orbit Oxygen facility, where the samples were exposed to atomic oxygen, simulating exposure to 1 year of Low Earth Orbit environment. Characterisation of the surfaces of tested materials was carried out with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. On the Kapton, the carbon fibre reinforced polymer and the infrared window material, atomic oxygen damage was observed on the surface and the suspected corrosion product may have been volatile CO. Solid corrosion products were also found on the infrared window. In the case of the printed circuit board, the metallic part was found to be more resistant to atomic oxygen than the polymeric part.
