The ICT sector is a driving force of the economy; however, Europe continues to face a shortage of skilled ICT professionals. The proportion of women in the sector has remained persistently low over the past decade. The European Union’s Digital Decade aims to increase female participation in this field. According to Eurostat, women make up only 26.8% of the ICT workforce in Estonia, while the EU average stands at 14%. The OSKA labour market forecast indicates that the shortage of ICT specialists in Estonia will persist, which has led to growing emphasis on reskilling and upskilling initiatives. Participation in adult education in Estonia is on the rise, and several master’s programmes and continuing education courses have been developed to facilitate career transitions into the ICT sector. This master’s thesis examines women’s motivations and expectations when making such a career change and compares the impact of master’s-level studies with that of short-term continuing education programmes. To analyse the topic, 17 semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who had transitioned to the ICT sector from other fields. The participants included seven graduates of master’s programmes, eight graduates of continuing education courses, and two women who had completed both types of training. The findings indicate that women entering the ICT sector through reskilling often experience a pronounced sense of being a beginner—an uncertainty that theoretical preparation alone does not fully alleviate. At the same time, their studies foster a growing understanding of the sector’s diversity and opportunities, which in turn enhances motivation and readiness to build a career in the field. Based on insights from the interviews and the theoretical framework of this thesis, the study provides recommendations on supportive factors that can facilitate women’s successful entry into the ICT sector.
