Arvutiteaduse instituutErasure-correcting codes add redundancy to data, allowing the recovery of original data in case of erasures, thereby reducing the risk of data loss. This thesis analyzes the application of different erasure-correcting codes in storage systems. Reed-Solomon codes offer the maximum possible erasure correction for a given amount of redundancy, but they are computationally expensive, while XOR-based array codes are computationally efficient, making them ideal for RAID systems. LDPC codes are well-suited for large distributed storage systems, while convolutional codes show promise in simpler storage environment. The thesis also includes the implementation and comparison of a convolutional encoder and two decoding algorithms.
