    Eesti kirjanduselu Torontos
(Tartu Ülikool, 2014) Karus, Kathriin; Merilai, Arne, juhendaja; Noorhani, Piret, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Kultuuriteaduste ja kunstide instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Filosoofiateaduskond; Tartu Ülikool. Kirjanduse ja teatriteaduse osakond
Bakalaureusetöö eesmärk on kirjeldada läänediasporaa ühe suurima eestlaste keskuse, Toronto, kirjanduslikku tegevust alates 1950. aastast tänapäevani.

Estonians in Canada: identity in Salme Ekbaum’s novel Külaliseks on ootus
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Maripuu, Relika; Rein, Eva, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond
The present thesis analyses Salme Ekbaum’s novel Külaliseks on ootus in an attempt to explicate the problems that immigrants have with accommodating to a new country and identifying themselves. The main aim of the thesis is to find out the reasons for the two protagonists’ personal identity issues and determine what facilitates and complicates their process of adaption to Canadian society. The thesis consists of four parts: the introduction, two chapters and the conclusion. The introduction gives an overview of Estonian literature in Canada and states the importance of Ekbaum’s novel from the diasporic as well as the Canadian perspective. It introduces the author and the main characters in the novel Külaliseks on ootus. It also presents the research questions and defines the terms migration trauma and liminality.

“@Government There’s a pothole in my street!”: Canadian citizens’ adoption choices of social media use in citizen-government relations
    (2021-11) Homburg, Vincent; Moody, Rebecca
Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook offer new opportunities for co-production and interaction between citizens and government agencies. Until now, explanations of why citizens use social media to interact with government have been lacking in the literature. This article concludes on the basis of survey data gathered among Canadian citizens that social media use in citizen-government relations is explained by citizens’ perceived effectiveness and trust in social media organizational infrastructure, with trust in government, social media anxiety and ease of use not having an impact. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Member state involvement in the area of EU exclusive competence: the case of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement
(Tartu Ülikool, 2018) Belija, Krista; Ehin, Piret, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
Free and open trade is crucial for the European Union. Currently, the EU is the world’s largest trading bloc managing trade and investment relations with non-EU countries. The common commercial policy is the area of EU exclusive Competence. The Commission is responsible for legislation on trade matters, and for concluding international trade agreements. Despite this member states are not entirely excluded from trade negotiations. This thesis looks at negotiation process of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) signed in 2016, with parts of it coming into force already in 2017. Using theoretical framework of liberal intergovernmentalism and principal-agent framework this thesis seeks to answer how, and to what extent, the large member states of the EU influence the negotiations of an international trade agreement. CETA case proves that large member states can influence the area of EU exclusive competence. Member states have been involved in certain stages of the negotiation process. Moreover, the level of influence depends on the domestic situation, governments’ stances and national interests.

Political regimes and vaccine procurement policies during the Covid-19 pandemic
(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Kolts, Sarah Francesca; Makarychev, Andrey, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
The objective of this analysis, is to understand where from did countries with different democracy levels procure vaccines, what countries took part in vaccine diplomacy and vaccine nationalism and what countries with different democracy levels have interacted with each other regards to vaccine procurement. The analysis was conducted categorizing nine countries – Estonia, Canada, Japan, Hungary, Brazil, Indonesia, China, Cuba and Russia, based on their democracy level, subsequently finding how these countries’ governments procured vaccines or exported them and finally analysing the findings. Estonia, Canada and Japan in the Democratic group category, procured vaccines exclusively from private pharmaceutical companies, because these private companies were transparent in their clinical trials on the efficacy and safety of the vaccines. Countries in this group would not procure vaccines from foreign state-owned enterprises, because that would indicate support for that government. Hungary, Brazil and Indonesia in the Flawed Democracy group, were most likely to procure vaccines from private pharmaceutical companies and from foreign state-owned enterprises. This is due to lower standards on transparency during clinical trials and on the efficacy and safety of the vaccines. Flawed Democracy group is the receiver part of vaccine diplomacy. China, Cuba and Russia in the Nondemocratic group, were most likely to develop, approve and manufacture vaccines exclusively from their respective state-owned or local enterprises, due to protectionism. China and Russia valued more exporting vaccines, than vaccinating their populations, while Cuba determined on vaccinating their public.

Renewable energy’s effect on the economy
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Mathiesen, Maiko; Toomla, Raul, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
Climate change mitigation and dealing with ecological catastrophes is one of the hottest topics in modern global politics. There’s a wide acceptance that these problems are man-made, but a lingering political stalemate and expectations for economic growth, have not helped the cause to reduce greenhouse gas’ (GHG) emissions. Since the energy sector is the biggest emitter, states and international organisations are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources (RES) with an expectation that it will soon replace fossil-fuel origin sources from economies’ energy portfolios. Consequently, renewables, with their pros and cons, have started to get the attention of critics, who blame the RES sector for being no different to any other capitalistic industry, thus always looking to expand without achieving any of the ambitious global sustainability standards. The main aim of this paper is not only to refute such criticism, but to reveal that a share of renewable energy in a states’ total primary energy supply (TPES), is not only helping to fight against the climate change, but also brings additional value to the economy. To prove the thesis is correct, the author conducted a series of Pearson’s r and Spearman’s ρ correlation tests between the independent variable (RES/TPES) and the dependent economic variables of GDP, energy intensity (EI) and adjusted net worth (ANS). The results revealed that an increase in renewables in the energy sector mostly does not affect the GDP, but when correlated against an economic indicator that on some scale makes distinctions between environmentally harmful and harmless economic activities, e.g. ANS, then the test results proved, that increases in renewables add value to the economy without unsustainably expanding it. The results of this thesis also highlight how the developed and developing countries are differently affected by RES implementation.

Response to the trauma of World War II and Japanese Canadian internment in Joy Kogawa’s Obasan
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Suur, Ester; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond
As trauma influences the lives of many people in different ways, it has become a prominent topic in literature. Joy Kogawa’s Obasan focuses on the traumatic experiences of Japanese Canadians during World War II and concomitant internment as well as the impact of these events on the community. This thesis analyses the novel in attempt to discover how two of the book’s characters Aunt Emily and Mother react to this trauma and how it influences the novel’s main character Naomi.

The rise and fall of Gilead: an analysis through the character of Aunt Lydia in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Rehelem, Johanna; Rein, Eva, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond
There are many crucial and large-scale problems in the world and the society we live in today. This thesis analyses two novels, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, by Margaret Atwood, who has tackled some of these problems in a frighteningly accurate way. Both of these novels should be read with attention and a purpose of heeding to the warnings theypresent us with. History has given us wars, hunger and so many other devastating events, but humans rarely stop to think about where the future might lead, if they do not learn from their mistakes. This is exactly why Atwood’s novels should be handled as warning stories and something to think about – all that has happened in the past might very well happen again. The following thesis that is based on their analysis emphasises the necessity of contemplating these problems.
