Between the United States and China: Philippines foreign policy in the case of South China Sea
(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Kirp, Ingrid; Dharmaputra, Radityo, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
In 2016 there were several events that could change the Philippines' foreign policy in Southeast Asia. The tensions in the South China Sea were growing since several parties claimed the sea, and there were new presidents elected in the Philippines and the United States. This thesis focuses on the Philippines' strategy in this complicated geopolitical situation between the two great powers, the United States of America and China. The aim of this thesis was to identify how the Philippines respond to the changing geopolitical dynamics in the region after 2016 in the case of the South China Sea and which strategy they are using in their actions. The author explains the situation in the region, defines a small state, and then discusses the potential strategies a small state has in the case. The author set a hypothesis that the Philippines mainly use a hedging strategy to respond to the region's geopolitical dynamics. To test the hypothesis, the author conducted content analysis on the Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte's speeches, statements, interviews, and press conferences between 2016-2020. There were used official sources from the presidential web page. The purpose was to find statements related to the United States, China, or the South China Sea and identify the strategies. The author confirmed the hypothesis. Several strategies were used to maneuver in this complicated geopolitical situation, such as balancing, bandwagoning, hedging, and engaging. According to the theoretical part and Duterte's statements, the main strategy used between 2016-2020 was hedging.

The role of infectious disease in the intensification of armed conflict: the relations between patrons and proxies during the Coronavirus pandemic
(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Shanava, Vazha; Dharmaputra, Radityo, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
The role of infectious diseases (IDs) and their effects on interstate and intrastate conflicts is one of the subjects of academic discussion (see CSIS & CBACI, 2000; Peterson, 2002; Ide, 2020; Mustasilta, 2020). The existing studies about infectious diseases and armed conflicts propose several explanations for how the former causes the latter (see CSIS & CBACI, 2000; Peterson, 2002; Ide, 2020; Mustasilta, 2020). However, most of the academic pieces miss the analysis of the possible intervening and controlling variables in the causal mechanism between disease and conflicts (see CSIS & CBACI, 2000; Peterson, 2002; Ide, 2020; Mustasilta, 2020). The paper aims to identify the intervening and controlling variables that play a key role in intensifying the modern conflicts during infectious disease pandemics. For this purpose, the paper will compare four conflicts at the time of the Coronavirus pandemic: the Libya civil war, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Colombian civil war, and the civil war of the Philippines. The study will do a chronological analysis of the events and data of each of the abovementioned conflicts. By analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data, the paper will propose a comprehensive understanding of the reasons for conflict intensifications before and during the pandemic. The research results reveal that the political revisionism of some patrons and proxies has a decisive role in intensifying the conflicts during the pandemic. The paper finds that those conflicts which contain patrons and proxies with revisionist aspirations are more likely to be intensified during the pandemic than those that do not contain patrons and proxies at all. The analysis of the role of infectious disease pandemics on armed conflicts may contribute to understanding the role of other global crises like the Coronavirus in escalating the wars.

The Russian dilemma: identity construction toward the BRICS
(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Nobre Bianchi, Felipe; Dharmaputra, Radityo, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
Russia faces an internal dilemma while projecting its identity toward the BRICS. The literature on the country identity suggests that it manifests both an imperial and great powerness self-perception, but in this case, Russia is dealing with a group with a solid postcolonial set of values. The poststructuralist discourse analysis was the primary method for analyzing the country's instrumentalization of that dichotomy and the outcomes for Russian identity construction. The gathered data consists of the public and official discourses of both Russia and the BRICS during its regular and extraordinary meetings. It was possible to indicate that the country shows evidence of an attempt to engage its objectives in the group's agenda by the projection of its identity toward the group. The study also shows that Russia is under the effects of Othering with the BRICS. In which the contact with the group identity is also shaping the country's identity. The conclusion is that Russia is developing a pragmatic approach to postcolonial narratives to advance its agenda, but the country was not able to construct a solid leadership in the BRICS.

Russian Twitter diplomacy in Indonesia and Malaysia before and after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine
(Tartu Ülikool, 2023) Palupi, Talitha Dian; Ibadildin, Nygmet, juhendaja; Dharmaputra, Radityo, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
The digital transformation has redefined the diplomacy landscape, with pivotal events reshaping our perception of the Internet's role in international affairs. The rise of social media platforms has allowed governments to establish direct communication channels with foreign audiences, facilitating real-time interactions and the swift dissemination of information online. Diplomats no longer stand as the sole architects of state narratives. Instead, other social media users shape a state's perceptions and images. This paradigm shift underscores the profound transformation of diplomacy, leading to a substantial overhaul of the public diplomacy agenda. The efficacy of digital public diplomacy hinges on diplomatic actors' adept navigation of this altered landscape. This study analyses tailored communication of digital public diplomacy using Russian digital public diplomacy via Twitter in Indonesia and Malaysia as case studies. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 serves as the backdrop for scrutinising Russian endeavours in digital public diplomacy in times of crisis. This study argues that institutional and audience factors play a significant role in shaping digital public diplomacy conduct. The study underscores the importance of tailored communication in achieving effective digital public diplomacy.
