Item A comparison of the descriptions of characters: Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and its Estonian translation(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Sedrik, Erkki; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžFrom the perspective of the target culture a translator’s work on a novel could be regarded as impactful and often as crucial as one of the the original author. As characters form a part of a story world, it is important for the translator to stay as close to the source text as possible when describing them, because otherwise the original mental image created in the readers’ mind could change completely. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the two main characters Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson in Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet(1887) and its translation Etüüd Punases(2003) by Agu Tann in order to see whether the way the characters are portrayed will affect their character descriptions in translation. I will utilize Edward Morgan Forster’s concept of flat and round characters for categorizing and comparing the characters in the original and in the translation.Item A Low’s Pentathlon analysis of translations of Estonian songs in the Eurovision Song contest(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Lai, Raimond; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžThe translation of song lyrics is one of the more complex fields of translation. While translations of song lyrics are relatively rare compared to other types of translation, one of the common occurrences of them is in the Eurovision Song Contest. Using English translations provided by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), this study aims to identify issues and notable aspects of translating songs from Estonian to English. The translations are analysed using Low’s (2005) Pentathlon Principle and compared to the musical notation to reveal how the aspects of singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm and rhyme influence the performability of a translation. The EBU translations are then compared to sung translations to show how different approaches can produce considerably different results in terms of singability. The results of the analysis are used to exemplify how aspects like stress and rhythmic match have a considerable effect on the singability of a translation and how semantic flexibility can allow the translator to work within the limitations posed by the musical aspects of melody and rhythm.Item A Study On the Translation of Stream of Consciousness in Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Põldmaa, Kady; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondTranslation studies influence the promotion of intercultural dialogue between smaller languages and more widely spoken ones. This dialogue may aid in advocating towards cultural and linguistic diversity and preservation and possibly lead to a more connected world. The roughly 1.1 million native speakers make Estonian a small language, which might influence the availability of resources or hinder the filling of research gaps. This thesis studies the translation of the narrative method of stream of consciousness from English to Estonian. The source text is Mrs. Dalloway (1935) by Virginia Woolf and the target text Proua Dalloway (1998) by Riina Jesmin. This research inquires into the strategies the translation of Mrs. Dalloway uses to render stream of consciousness, as well as into the implications of linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target culture. The thesis consists of an introduction, which presents a short synopsis of the novel and what it is known for. The next chapter covers relevant literature about stream of consciousness, Mrs. Dalloway and translation theories. The empirical chapter studies the characteristics of the source text and analyses the target text on the backdrop of the literature review. The analysis will focus on the first and last two pages of the novel, featuring consecutive extracts from the source and the target text. The methods of close reading and structural analysis will be employed with some historical and cultural contextualization. Follows a discussion.Item An analysis of Hans Luik’s translation of Jonathan Harker’s journals in Bram Stoker’s Dracula(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Luik, Maarja; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondA translator's work on a novel can be regarded as impactful and often times can be considered the item which could support the success of work. For that reason, translations should usually try to convey the meaning of the text, but also attempt to keep the original style and narrative tools in place. Attempting to keep those things intact could prove a challenge to translators for various reasons, and diverting from the original form can end the translation up with translational deforming tendencies, most famously listed by Antoine Berman. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the deforming tendencies visible in the translation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, specifically focusing on the journal entries of Jonathan Harker.Item An analysis of Johannes Aavik‘s visibility in translating Edgar Allan Poe‘s The fall of the house of Usher(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Kähr, Aigar; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžItem Carolyne Larringtoni teose "Winter is coming: the medieval world of Game of Thrones" ühe ja poole peatüki tõlge ning tõlke analüüs(Tartu Ülikool, 2018) Mägi, Merlin; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Tõlkeõpetuse ja -uuringute osakondMagistriprojekti raames tõlgiti Carolyne Larringtoni teos „Winter is coming. The Medieval world of Game of Thrones“, millest valiti analüüsimiseks üks ja pool peatükki. Item Changes in narrative speed and rhythm in Tõnu Õnnepalu’s Piiririik and its translation Border state(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Sokk, Helve; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžItem Comparative analysis of the translation methods of slang words in hard-boiled crime fiction: James Hadley Chase's Mission to Siena and its two Estonian translations(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Kloss, Helena; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondThis thesis focusses the detective fiction subcategory of hard-boiled crime fiction and its main characteristics specifically slang words and their translation strategies. The analysis is based on James Hadley Chase's Mission to Siena (1955) and its two different translations from English into Estonian, both published in 1991. The first part of the thesis consists of an overview of detective crime fiction and its subcategories with a focus on hard-boiled crime fiction and its characteristics. In the following slang is defined and the most used translation strategies for translating slang are described. The first part also contains a deliberation on the possible reasons for the phenomenon of two simultaneously published different translations. The second part of the thesis focusses on the comparative analysis of the translations of Mission to Siena by Votele Viidemann (Missioon Sienas) and Kaimo Vuks (Kilpkonna tuleb otsida Sienast). The translators' choices concerning translation methods used for slang words translation are compared and analysed.Item Comparative analysis of two translations of the poem 서시 (seoshi) by the Korean poet Yoon Dong Ju from Korean into English(Tartu Ülikool, 2019) Rips, Elisabeth; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Park, Jung Ran, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondThe aim of this paper is to show that even if the translator understands two different languages, translating poetry is challenging, as there are many cases when, we have to omit or change words or phrases to keep the poetical or prosodic aspects. We can also see that in this case translators can understand that the denotative options do not carry the emotion of the words that are expressed. For this thesis I will study two translations into English of the poem 서시(seoshi) by a famous Korean poet Yoon Dong Ju (1910–1945) and analyse the differences between them. The translations under scrutiny are: Chae-Pyong Song and Darcy Brandel’s Prologue, Kyung-nyun Kim Richards and Steffen F. Richards Foreword.Item Creating CLIL materials for teaching local history in English(Tartu Ülikool, 2023) Maripuu, Relika; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. The amazing adventure of translation" viie peatüki tõlge eesti keelde ja tõlkeprobleemide analüüs(Tartu Ülikool, 2019) Kalbus, Külliki; Tartu Ülikool. Tõlkeõpetuse ja -uuringute osakond; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkondMagistriprojekt koosneb David Bellose teose „Is That a Fish in Your Ear? The Amazing Adventure of Translation“ viie peatüki tõlkest eesti keelde ja tõlkimise käigus tekkinud probleemide analüüsist. Item The effect of Focus on Form activities in EFL classroom: new vocabulary from reading texts(Tartu Ülikool, 2015-06-12) Aava, Mariann; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond; Tartu Ülikool. FilosoofiateaduskondAntud uurimus tegeleb Fookus Vormil (Focus on Form, FonF) lähenemisega sõnavara õppimisel. Antud tulemused loovad baasi Fookus Vormile lähenemise edasi uurimiseks, kaasates järgmisel korral veel suurema grupi õpilasi ning kontrollides paari nädala möödudes, kui palju sõnu õpilastel siis meeles on.Item Empowerment and poetry: feminist Ideas in milk and honey by social media poet Rupi Kaur(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Kalda, Gerda; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Steinberg, Külliki, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžForeign language anxiety (FLA) has been a subject of a growing body of research because FLA is an intense as well as frequent experience. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether and how can vlogging reduce students' foreign language anxiety and promote their self-confidence when performing oral tasks in the EFL classroom. The hypothesis was that after completing the program of vlogging and giving feedback on each other’s vlogs in EFL classes, anxious students would show a decrease in verbal anxiety, somatic symptoms and tendency to overthinking. According to the purpose of the study, qualitative research methods were used to carry out the research. Four upper secondary school students whose anxiety was rated high or very high according to the modified Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire, participated in an optional subject course in English on vlogging and were later interviewed about their experience and the perceived outcome. The course took place in one of the Estonian upper secondary schools from September 3 to November 15, 2019, and the post-vlogging interview and questionnaire were carried out in December 2019 and January 2020. The students' responses were categorized and the results of the questionnaires and the interviews were analysed.Item Enhancing intrinsic motivation in EFL classroom: implementing SDT concepts on homework(Tartu Ülikool, 2023) Laur-Põder, Ilona; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituutItem Exploiting newspaper articles to develop higher order thinking skills in secondary school English classes(Tartu Ülikool, 2018) Rääk, Katrin; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkondThe topic for this research was influenced by the discussions in the field of education on the topics of 21st century learning skills and the concept of a changed learning approach. The aim of this paper is to use authentic texts found in English newspapers with the purpose to teach higher order thinking skills to students at upper-secondary school level as part of English as a second language classes. So as to answer the research question on how newspaper articles could be implemented to teach and assess the acquisition of higher order thinking skills, a set of exemplary tasks are compiled and conclusions are drawn from both the studentsʼ answers and lesson observations. The study is organised into three chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of the researches of thinking and higher order thinking processes. The second chapter of this thesis looks upon the advantages and disadvantages of using newspaper articles as authentic material in language classes. This chapter also focuses on the issues of choosing suitable material as well as on the production of different tasks that could be designed and used in an English class. The third chapter includes an empirical case study conducted among my students from forms 10 and 11 at Rocca al Mare School. An introductory questionnaire was conducted to map the understanding of critical thinking as the highest of the thinking skills, as well as the studentsʼ attitude to the texts found in course books.Item Exploring neologisms : two Ukrainian translations of Aldous Huxley's Brave new world(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Hrebenata, Svitlana; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondAldous Huxley’s Brave New World uses neologisms to paint a detailed picture of a future society, making it especially interesting to study how this aspect is handled in translation. This thesis looks at the two existing Ukrainian translations of the novel by Marenko in 1994 and Morozov in 2016, focusing on how each translator approached Huxley’s unique use of language and what these approaches mean considering the construction of the novel’s dystopian setting. The thesis also examines why Morozov felt compelled to create a new translation so soon after Marenko’s, trying to pinpoint what changed in translation tactics and why. The thesis is structured as follows: an introduction that sets the stage for the exploration of neologisms in translation, followed by Chapter 1, which establishes a theoretical framework discussing neologisms, their role in literature, and their translation challenges, particularly in dystopian settings. Chapter 2 offers a comparative analysis of the translation techniques of neologisms used by Marenko and Morozov, providing a systematic categorization to enhance clarity and support the discussion. The thesis concludes with a final chapter that summarizes the findings and discusses the broader implications of these translations for understanding the language and cultural adaptation in literature.Item Foreign language anxiety among Estonian basic school English language students: contributing factors and coping strategies(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Lambrik, Oliver; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžItem From novel to Film: Atonement(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Bakhshaliyeva, Ilaha; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkondThe thesis aims to compare and analyze Ian McEwan’s Atonement (2001) and its film adaptation with the same title directed by Joe Wright (2007). The novel has a complex narrative structure which allows the readers to experience how Briony, the narrator who is in the end turns out to be unreliable, constructs fiction in order to atone for her mistake: an unreliable narrator tells the reliable truth. The thesis aims to analyze the use, function and outcome of narration both in the novel and in the film. In order to attain the aim, this thesis sets out to investigate the aspects that have undergone changes during the process of adaptation as well as how these changes affect the outcome for the reader/viewer in each case.Item Good omens: translation across media in the context of transmedia(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Edovald, Eda; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool.
