Majandusteaduskond; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkondExecutive Duo Leadership (EDL) is a leadership model in which two top executives of equal status jointly lead an organization. This thesis introduces EDL as a distinct concept within shared leadership theory and investigates its applicability in the private sector, based on qualitative interviews with 16 leaders from nine companies in Estonia and Finland. Findings confirm EDL’s benefits for decision-making, organizational performance, and executive well-being. Practitioners emphasize psychological support, crisis resilience, and interpersonal dynamics as key success factors. Theoretical concerns—such as role ambiguity or slowed decision-making—proved rare when mutual trust and value alignment were present. Using a hybrid methodology combining deductive and inductive content analysis, the study reveals that EDL's success relies more on human connection than formal structure. The thesis contributes both conceptually and empirically to leadership scholarship, offering practical guidance for organizations navigating complexity through duo leadership.
