This thesis aims to show the different vocabulary learning activities the mobile language learning applications Busuu and Speakly use to help their clients learn English vocabulary. This thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an analysis of Busuu and Speakly, and a conclusion. The literature review focuses on vocabulary learning by looking at relevant articles and studies and also gives an overview of the literature and previous studies done on language learning applications. The second part of the thesis provides a comparative analysis of the activities for vocabulary learning provided in the applications Speakly and Busuu. Anglistika osakondMedia representation plays a crucial role in (de-)legitimizing social movements and their participants. This thesis aims to compare the representations of two consequential events in Eastern Europe—the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine (2013-2014) and the Belarus protests (2020-2021)—in The New York Times, a major global media outlet. The study specifically concentrates on the naming strategies used for the events and social actors and the attribution of responsibility for violence. To achieve this goal, a corpus-assisted approach to discourse analysis and van Leeuwen’s framework for social actors’ analysis are employed. The Sketch Engine tool is used to analyze two corpora, which together encompass 167 articles (192,111 words). The thesis consists of five sections. The introduction delves into media power and representation. The first chapter discusses the process of news construction and the role of language in it, the media coverage of social movements, the background of the analyzed events, the ethical policy of The New York Times, and previous research on the analyzed events and protests in general. The second chapter presents the methodological approaches employed (critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and van Leeuwen’s framework for analyzing social actors) and details the methodological procedure. The final chapter reports and discusses the findings of the analysis. Anglistika osakondThe aim of this study is to examine the use of amplifiers in the writing of Latvian learners of English. The investigation is based on data from the LEFL (Latvian EFL Learner) corpus and the GiG (Growth in Grammar) corpus, allowing for a comparison between foreign–language (L2) and first–language (L1) English usage. The focus on amplifiers was motivated by a preliminary analysis, which revealed that adverbs of degree, more specifically amplifiers, produced the highest number of occurrences in the corpus. The most frequent amplifiers – really, very, and more – aligned with findings from previous studies, confirming their status as common modifiers. While adjectives were the most frequently modified items across both corpora, the native speaker data displayed a greater variety of modified words, whereas the learner corpus exhibited a broader range of amplifier. Furthermore, the study explored potential first–language (L1) influence on foreign–language (L2) usage; however, it was concluded that the dataset was too limited in size to draw definitive conclusions regarding this aspect. Anglistika osakondDiscourse markers (DMs) in speech have been extensively researched, particularly since the late twentieth century, with growing focus on DMs in learner language in recent decades. However, filler words in learner language have not been as vastly researched and thus, this thesis at hand aims to address this gap by contributing to a few studies made in Estonia so far. The thesis focuses primarily on the use of the filler so in the speech of Estonian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and native English speakers utilizing the Estonian subcorpus of the Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI-EST) and the Louvain Corpus of Native English Conversation (LOCNEC). Additionally, it aims to analyse whether so is used more as a filler, a conjunction or an adverb between the two groups. The introduction part of the thesis introduces the topic and corpora at hand, states the two research questions and gives an overview of all the sections of the thesis. The first part is concerned with previous studies conducted on both discourse markers and fillers in speech and how so functions as a filler, a conjunction and an adverb. The empirical section of the thesis gives an overview of the methodology, the corpora used in the study and analyses the use of so. The last part of the thesis discusses the findings based on the results gathered from the data. Anglistika osakondThe present thesis aims to study the phenomenon of pop culture driving a modern renaissance of classical culture by conducting a thematic analysis of fan discourse on the r/Hozier subreddit, a digital communication hub for fans of the Irish musical artist Hozier. The study aims to reveal how online fan communities contribute to the phenomenon and how analyzing the relevant discourse helps us understand it. The thesis includes an introduction, a literature review, an empirical study and a conclusion. The introduction provides background information on Hozier and his inspiration for the album Unreal Unearth (2023). The literature review introduces the academic literature on Hozier, fandom studies, and the social media platform Reddit. The empirical study covers the collection and pre-processing of data, as well as the thematic analysis of 27 posts and related comments in eight thematic subsections. The discussion of the findings and their implications is presented in a separate subsection. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis and considers possibilities for further research. Anglistika osakondTranslation studies influence the promotion of intercultural dialogue between smaller languages and more widely spoken ones. This dialogue may aid in advocating towards cultural and linguistic diversity and preservation and possibly lead to a more connected world. The roughly 1.1 million native speakers make Estonian a small language, which might influence the availability of resources or hinder the filling of research gaps. This thesis studies the translation of the narrative method of stream of consciousness from English to Estonian. The source text is Mrs. Dalloway (1935) by Virginia Woolf and the target text Proua Dalloway (1998) by Riina Jesmin. This research inquires into the strategies the translation of Mrs. Dalloway uses to render stream of consciousness, as well as into the implications of linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target culture. The thesis consists of an introduction, which presents a short synopsis of the novel and what it is known for. The next chapter covers relevant literature about stream of consciousness, Mrs. Dalloway and translation theories. The empirical chapter studies the characteristics of the source text and analyses the target text on the backdrop of the literature review. The analysis will focus on the first and last two pages of the novel, featuring consecutive extracts from the source and the target text. The methods of close reading and structural analysis will be employed with some historical and cultural contextualization. Anglistika osakondThis thesis explores representations of hegemonic masculinity and fatherhood in God of War (2018) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). Analyzing the father-child dynamics between Geralt and Ciri, and Kratos and Atreus, it examines how traditional masculine ideals of authority and emotional restraint are both reinforced and challenged. Drawing on Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity and trauma-informed perspectives, the study reveals how these games critique patriarchal fatherhood and propose alternative models emphasizing empathy and cooperation. This research contributes to understanding evolving masculinity in video game narratives. A total of nine transcripts were taken and analysed to see if gridiron football commentary has gone through any major changes or if it has not really changed much over the years. The first part covers the language used in sports and their characteristics while also introducing the roles of the commentators and the differences between radio and television broadcasts that were used in the second part. Additionally, the first half of the paper takes a brief look at previous studies covering this topic. Anglistika osakondThe aim of this thesis is to determine how environmental topics are represented in I Love English textbooks 5-7 in the broader context of developing environmental education and critical language awareness in the EFL classroom. For this, an ecolinguistic analysis of the language features in the textbooks was conducted and the reoccurring ideologies identified. The analysis identified the presence of beneficial, destructive and ambivalent discourses about nature. Romanistika osakondEl objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las diferencias entre los subtítulos intralingüísticos y el audio original, así como las técnicas utilizadas y las palabras modificadas en la serie Chicas del cable. Para ello, la autora creó un corpus lingüístico en Excel y aplicó un enfoque cuantitativo. Los resultados mostraron que la técnica más empleada fue la reducción, seguida de la omisión. Se observó que las oraciones completas fueron las más eliminadas y los verbos, los más sustituidos. La autora propuso una clasificación propia de las técnicas. À partir d'un corpus d'articles issus de six journaux français, l'étude se concentre sur les stratégies de cadrage médiatique à travers la thématisation, la désignation et le discours rapporté. En s'appuyant sur l'approche de Wander Emediato (2011), l'analyse révèle une couverture moins neutre et plus politisée des débats législatifs et une moindre couverture des débats européens dans leur ensemble. Romanistika osakondCe mémoire compare les programmes électoraux européens 2024 du Rassemblement National (RN) et Fratelli d’Italia (FdI) et analyse les stratégies discursives employées. Considérant leurs origines communes mais trajectoires politiques divergentes (RN en opposition vs. FdI en gouvernement), cette étude contrastive vise à identifier les différences linguistiques reflétant ces positionnements politiques en combinant des analyses qualitatives et quantitatives. Le travail examine trois axes : l’usage des verbes, les orientations évaluatives et les métaphores conceptuelles. Les résultats montrent une rhétorique plus conflictuelle et accusatrice chez le RN, tandis que le FdI emploie aussi un discours développementaliste et réformiste, suggérant des processus et des succès distincts de normalisation et dédiabolisation.
