Cross-spatial possibilities : dance heritage transmission in Gyumri
(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Abrell, Christine Marie; Williams, Deborah, juhendaja; Seljamaa, Elo-Hanna, juhendaja; Yohannes, Hyab, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Kultuuriteaduste instituut
This study explores the role that museums and heritage/cultural spaces within Gyumri, Armenia, play in the transmission of Armenian ethnographic dance intangible cultural heritage. By conducting qualitative research centring around Hrayrk Traditional Dance Group and the Gyumri Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life, the study examines how practitioner-led initiatives might expand informal educational efforts, harnessing museums and other cultural third spaces in innovative ways for the reembodiment of ethnographic dance as a central component of Armenian community life. Specific avenues could be community-led events of practice, an increased sense of belonging for practitioners, and the addition of historical/cultural context.

Dynamics of Armenia’s role conceptions and expectations 2018–2024: navigating EU-Russia contestation
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Aloe, Christopher; Berg, Eiki, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
This thesis analyses the change of role conceptions and expectations of Armenia from 2018 to 2024, focusing on what can be seen as critical junctures that could induce role changes: the Velvet Revolution in 2018, the defeat of the Second Karabakh war in 2020 and the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023. Additionally, the Russian full-scale aggression war against Ukraine in February 2022 significantly altered the geopolitical landscape, intensifying the West and Russian contestation over what is considered to be in-between of these two powers. This study not only explores how a country in the region – Armenia – perceives its role in the world, the contestation of these two powers and who their partners should be, but also how changing conditions and external shocks impact the roles of a country. This examination reveals the volatility and stability of the role a country conceptualizes for itself and others. Armenia’s role was influenced by these events, leading to changes in its role conceptions and expectations regarding the EU and Russia, though not resulting in a complete U-turn. Whereas Armenia initially viewed itself as a faithful ally of Russia, considering Russia a security guarantor, this perception shifted, with Armenia seeing Russia as just another ally/partner, unable to provide security guarantees and even posing a potential threat. Throughout the time Armenia saw itself as being a European democracy and the EU as a partner in democratic development and reforms. Over time, this perception evolved, with Armenia increasingly seeing the EU as a security guarantor and with whom Armenia seeks as close relations as possible. In managing these relations Armenia saw itself in the role of a bridge and, ultimately, also as an independent actor, who has relations with everyone. Additionally, Armenia saw itself in the role of genocide preventer.

Negotiating identities: the effect of Russian in-migration on LGBTQ+ populations in Georgia and Armenia
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Kuenning, Alexandra; Pääbo, Heiko, juhendaja; Darchiashvili, Mariam, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
This research explores the effect of Russian in-migration following the invasion of Ukraine on LGBTQ+ populations in Georgia and Armenia. Using a small-n research design for data collection, in the form of semi-structured interviews with LGBTQ+ Georgians and LGBTQ+ Armenians currently residing in either Tbilisi or Yerevan, this thesis is also an attempt to contribute to the decolonialist literature of North-South migration whereby local populations, particularly those generally marginalised in research, are given a voice. This research finds that the most critical effect stemming from the mass migration was related to increased economic pressures, whereby an already precarious population is made more insecure, leading to an increased outward migration and nihilism among the population. In addition, privilege, respect, and post-colonialism were all important considerations to take into account when examining whether there was space for collaboration or integration on the basis of a shared social identity, particularly among LGBTQ+ Georgians. While similar issues existed among LGBTQ+ Armenians, there was more openness to engaging with LGBTQ+ Russians due to a different history of conflict and the role of Armenian-Russian “bridge-makers.”

Why opt for military drones in case of superiority in air space? The case of the second Karabakh war (2020)
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Beruashvili, Levan; Berg, Eiki, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
This thesis analyses the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, and it will examine the historical context of the first Karabakh War as well in order to understand the root causes of the conflict. The particular focus will be on the thesis question: Why opt for military drones in case of superiority in air space? In order to answer the question of this research, three theoretical approaches will be used. The balance of power theory explains the imbalances in power when we compare both countries' military expenditures and military capabilities, especially when we are talking about airspace superiority. The military cost and benefit analysis explains cost-related aspects of why it is better to use drones instead of conventional aircraft, and the military strategic theory explains what, why and how were used in order to achieve success and minimise costs. The national security strategy documents of Azerbaijan and Armenia were also analysed briefly in order to understand how both countries perceived the incoming threats and approached the war.
