Analysis of queer themes in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The thesis focuses on how the characters in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s challenge heteronormative ideas about sexuality. The thesis is divided into two main sections: literature review and the analysis. The first part discusses the previous work on Capote’s writing style and the queer aspects of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and explains how queer people were treated in the 1950s United States. The second section is divided into three parts: direct and indirect references to queerness, and references to sports which is used to emphasize how Capote’s characters do not conform to the societal expectations. Afterwards, the analysis is tied to Capote’s writing style to explain how he depicts his queer characters. The conclusion presents the major findings of the thesis. This thesis aims to explore the development of Nicholas Hoel and analyse how his role as an artist contributes to the portrayal of human-tree relationships and environmental themes in Richard Powers’ novel The Overstory. The thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an empirical analysis part, and a conclusion. The introduction provides brief background information on the author and a summary of the novel. The literature review consists of an overview of environmental discussions in literature, the role of art in conveying environmental issues, and the existing research on The Overstory in the context of environmental discourse. The empirical part explores Nicholas’ character development within the novel’s narrative framework. This part also analyses Nicholas Hoel’s artwork and its evolution throughout the novel. The conclusion presents the summary of the thesis’ findings.

The thesis at hand aims to analyze how the main character of Edith Wharton’s Summer(1917) tries to achieve her independence from men. The thesis will explore the female gaze, sexual awakening, and women depending on men from a feminist perspective. For this thesis I use Annette Kolodny’s feminist theories and her view on feminist literary criticism. Kolodny’s perspective that feminism in literature is directly influenced by the lived world and vice versa is applicable for the analysis of Summer. The thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an empirical analysis of the novel, and a conclusion. The introduction provides context for the novel and the historical background of feminism.The literature review summarizes previous studies and analyses of the novel and gives a brief overview of depictions of feminism in literature. The empirical part of the thesis provides an analysis of key moments in the novel through close reading. The analysis explores how the chosen topics provide the main character with the strength to try to become independent. The conclusion summarizes the main findings of the thesis.

British and American accent features in the pronunciation of Estonian learners of English

This thesis examines how Estonian learners of English produce five phonetic features associated with Standard Southern British (SSB) and general American (GenAm). The features are rhoticity, t-voicing, and three vowel contrasts (PALM/TRAP, LOT/PALM, THOUGHT/PALM). The study also considers how students’ self-reported accent preferences align with their actual pronunciation. Fifteen first-year students at the University of Tartu were analysed through recordings of Arthur the Rat. Findings show that while students often favour one variety, their speech blends features from both. Rhoticity was the most consistently realised feature, while vowel contrasts showed the most variation. Keywords: pronunciation, phonetics, British English, American English

Töö peamine eesmärk on vaadelda Chuck Palahniuki teost “Kaklusklubi” kui hälbekirjanduse žanri alla kuuluvat raamatut. Täpsemini uurisin, kuidas “Kaklusklubi” tegelased protesteerivad tarbimise ja tarbimisühiskonna vastu ja kuidas nende tegevusi on kujutatud. Kuna tarbimisühiskonnavastasus on “Kaklusklubis” läbiv teema ja see käivitab kogu sündmusteahela, siis arvan, et just seeläbi on hea vaadelda tegelaste käitumist ja proovida aru saada nende tehtud otsustest. Töö koosneb sissejuhatusest, teoreetilisest ja empiirilisest osast ning kokkuvõttest. Sissejuhatuses kirjeldan uuritava teema olulisust ja annan ülevaate, mis inspireeris kirjanik Chuck Palahniukiut kirjutama teost “Kaklusklubi”. Teoreetilise osaga annan põgusa ülevaate hälbekirjanduse žanrist ja tarbimisühiskonnas arengust Ameerikas. Empiirilises osas analüüsin tarbimisühiskonnavastasust “Kaklusklubis”. Teema analüüsimiseks kasutan ohtralt kirjeldusi raamatus, kuna raamat on kirjutatud in medias res narratiivis ja nii on lugejal teemast lihtsam aru saada, sest kõik on omavahel seotud.

Töö eesmärgiks on näidata, kuidas Anne Sexton sulandab muinasjuttude ümberjutustustesse oma kaasaegseid kultuurielemente, kuidas ta kasutab oma ümbertöötlustes feministlikke mõtteid ning milliste vahenditega ta loob muinasjuttude ümber laiemat konteksti.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the secondary characters and the means by which they influence the main character, Oedipa, in Thomas Pynchon’s novel The Crying of Lot 49. The thesis is composed of four main parts: the introduction, the literature review, the empirical analysis and the conclusion. The introduction gives a brief overview of postmodernist novels and of Pynchon’s works in particular. It also features a short overview of the thesis. The literature overview discusses the research that has already been done on Pynchon and focuses on the topics that are important for this thesis: entropy, paranoia and characterization. The empirical chapter analyses the secondary characters, discusses their influence on the protagonist and suggests the techniques used to achieve the effect. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis.

Religion and the United States government have a long history of conflict that is still a matter of debate today. The conflict between a woman’s body and laws regulating abortion has become one of the most controversial political topics in American society. The aim of this paper is to analyze Louise Erdrich’s Future Home of the Living God for elements of feminist dystopia and to demonstrate how it engages with the current political and religious tension regarding women’s rights and reproduction. The main purpose is to find out how Erdrich is able to create a dystopian world that closely reflects the current situation in the United States of America.
