A divided nation? Production and reproduction of national di/visions in Hungarian diaspora politics (2010–2019)
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Royer, Laura; Piirimäe, Eva, juhendaja; Kołodziej, Jacek, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
Since the democratic transition in the early nineties, successive Hungarian governments have sought to engage and support the Hungarian diaspora outside the borders of the state. This commitment to creating a diaspora community tied to an imagined motherland can be conceptualised as diaspora politics. Whilst diaspora politics should be differentiated from what is often referred to as nationalist politics, they are always concerned with the place of the diaspora in relation to the nation. In that regard, it can be said that diaspora politics – and the actors taking part in them – play a role in processes of nation-production, insofar as they contribute to the conservation or modifications of the principles of visions and divisions of the national world. Although diaspora politics have been an important feature of Hungarian politics for almost thirty years, the establishment of a Fidesz-KDNP government in 2010 constitutes a key moment in the development of Hungarian diaspora politics. The new government seized the pre-existing diaspora political institutions and developed a wide range of new laws, programmes, and institutions representing the Hungarian diaspora as embedded into the wider Hungarian nation. Drawing upon Pierre Bourdieu’s key political concepts, this thesis inquires how Hungarian diaspora politics between 2010 and 2019 have contributed to the production and reproduction of Hungarian national di/visions. Through an analysis of major laws, documents, institutions, programmes, and publications related to Hungarian diaspora politics between 2010 and 2019, it is argued that the development of a new legal and institutional framework for Hungarian diaspora politics since 2010 has provided the means to produce, reproduce, and legitimate the integration and dissolution of the diaspora in a redefined Hungarian nation. Furthermore, taking as a case study the journal Minority Studies edited by the Research Institute for Hungarian Communities Abroad (NPKI) between 2013 and 2016, this thesis contends that this diaspora integration has taken place through the redefinition of the boundaries of the national world. Specifically, the production of a renewed Hungarian nation has been permitted by the representations of historical, cultural, and political principles of national di/visions.

Analysing the Korean diaspora: a case study of Koryo-saram and Sakhalin Koreans
(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Jung, Hyogyeong; Banaszkiewicz, Magdalena, juhendaja; Unkovski-Korica, Vladimir, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
Koryo-saram and Sakhalin Koreans are ethnic Koreans living in the post-Soviet countries. This paper tries to clarify the terminology regarding these ethnic Koreans in the post-Soviet countries through the diaspora theory, and analyze them further with the concept of the ‘Korean diaspora’ and ‘the place of diaspora’. The research took Small-N comparison and case study method by reviewing Korean, Russian, and English literature. By analysing the Soviet Korean diaspora through ‘homeland-host country-international society’ framework with political, economic and social aspects, ‘the place of diaspora’ is visualised.

Countering Lukashenka’s authoritarian regime: the strategies of the Belarusian diaspora
(Tartu Ülikool, 2023) Potsepp, Kristel Birgit; Makarychev, Andrey, juhendaja; Braghiroli, Stefano, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
This Master’s thesis intends to research the ways in which the Belarusian diaspora is countering Lukashenka’s authoritarian regime. After the fraudulent presidential elections and protests in 2020, the majority of the country’s civil society has fled the country and the events of 2020 led to a new wave of politicised diaspora. To study the case, this research uses qualitative methods and process tracing. The sample consists of nine interviews: seven interviews with members of the Belarusian diaspora, one interview with a foreign affairs expert/diplomat and one interview with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. The analysis is based on five main themes that emerged from the theoretical framework and literature review. The results of this study show that the diaspora is using three main strategies in countering the authoritarian regime: a) raising awareness and bringing attention to the cause; b) policy-making and lobbying; and c) supporting the Belarusians and political prisoners. Furthermore, the role of utilising the ICTs is crucial in supporting the activities of the diaspora and they are used as a ‘liberation tool’. The main functions of the ICTs are a) communication tool amongst the diaspora and people living in Belarus; b) source of news and media awareness; and c) mobilisation tool. As a practical outcome, I have developed policy recommendations for Estonia and the EU based on the empirical findings of the thesis.

The dissertation is based on interviews with Russian anti-war activists, residing in Poland and extensive desk research, and aimed at enhancing comprehension of Russian diaspora involvement in anti-war activism in Poland. The thesis attempted to examine whether Russian activism in exile possesses the potential to serve as catalyst for positive change in the context of ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine and addressed the ways of cooperation between Russian civil society groups with other actors in the Polish and transnational context, and their perceptions of their role in laying the grounds for creating democracy for future Russia. Theoretically, the dissertation stems from social movements scholarship, civil resistance research, social psychology of contention and diaspora studies.

Narratives of Ukrainian diaspora mobilization in Canada: a discourse analysis
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Hryha, Ivan; Berg, Eiki, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
The largest Ukrainian diaspora is in Canada, however, after the start of massive Russian aggression in 2022, the figures for Canadian assistance to Ukraine cannot compete even with the five countries supplying assistance to Ukraine in the current situation. It is still unclear why the potential opportunity to influence Canada’s domestic and foreign policy was lost on the part of the Ukrainian diaspora, but in this thesis, we will look at how the mobilization of the Ukrainian diaspora took place in the light of unfavorable events in their native state. The purpose of this study is to find out how the Ukrainian diaspora mobilized its supporters in the period from 2014 to 2022. This study conducts a critical discourse analysis of the narratives that shaped the discourse of the presidents of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and contributed to the mobilization of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The thesis analyzes text and video reports of the presidents of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and focuses on 3 narratives: “Struggle for Freedom and Dignity” narrative, “Holodomor and Canada's First National Internment Operations” narrative, and “Ethnic and Organizational Cohesion” narrative. Thus, during the period under study, the participants of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress mainly used the “Struggle for freedom and dignity” narrative and the “Ethnic and organizational cohesion” narrative; they can rightfully be considered the dominant and formative narratives for the mobilization of the Ukrainian diaspora. The “Holodomor and Canada's First National Internment Operations” narrative was practically not used in the discourse to mobilize diaspora supporters.

Neuroscientific discourse in Madeleine Thien's "Dogs at the perimeter"
(Tartu Ülikool, 2019) Pärn, Õie; Rein, Eva, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakond
The present thesis analyses the function of neuroscientific discourse in Madeleine Thien’s novel Dogs at the Perimeter. The aim of the thesis is to explore the role and importance of neuroscientific descriptions and medical stories in the novel with regard to diasporic historical trauma and its workings, and diasporic historical trauma attending and coping mechanisms. The analysis is done through the examination of the similarities between diasporic historical trauma and structural trauma, meaning brain damage or brain lesions, on the example of the neuroscientific discourse presented in the novel. The present thesis consists of four parts: the introduction, two core chapters and the conclusion. The introduction highlights the general importance of the literary work in the light of the European migration crisis and waves of Syrian migration to Canada in addition to context-specific trauma attending. Furthermore, it gives an overview of Thien’s novel and discusses some of its aspects that are necessary for the analysis of the main character’s trauma.

Õigeusu kiriku struktuuri kujunemine ja diasporaa probleem õigeusu kirikus
(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Kaldoja, Allan; Rohtmets, Priit, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Usuteaduskond

Oral histories of Estonian Americans: leadership and the future of the diaspora after the cold war
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Johnson, Leah; Rybkowski, Radosław, juhendaja; Lepasaar Beecher, David Ilmar, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
The Estonian American National Council (EANC) was founded in 1952 by Estonian immigrants to the United States who had chosen exile over repatriation to Soviet-occupied Estonia. Their mission was to preserve Estonian culture in exile and to advocate for Estonian independence to the US government, which had already refused to recognize the annexation of the Baltic States. The restoration of Estonian independence in 1991 witnessed the accomplishment of at least part of the EANC’s founding purpose, which prompted reflection within the diaspora as to whether the organization was needed after the Cold War had ended. This MA thesis takes this pivotal moment as its point of departure and investigates the work and significance of the EANC leadership as community organizers through the memories and experiences of second-generation Estonian Americans affiliated with the organization in the 1980s and 1990s. These oral histories attest to the profound value of diaspora work supported for creating spaces where Estonian identity could be practiced in exile and for preserving a connection to Estonia amongst the second generation. Arguments in favor of the EANC’s continuation stated that its work was not done but had changed shape as the need for cultural preservation persisted and Russia continued to pose a security threat to Estonia. This MA thesis also finds that Estonian Americans wished to be participants, not just as visitors or tourists, in rebuilding Estonia, which prompted new organizational and individual activities to reconnect with the homeland.

Young Armenian diasporans in the fight for genocide recognition
(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Rippberger, Renée; Zajączkowska-Drożdż, Agnieszka, juhendaja; Kilp, Alar, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Sotsiaalteaduste valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Johan Skytte poliitikauuringute instituut
One cannot underestimate the historical and political implications of genocide and its denial have had on the trajectory and formation of the Armenia diaspora. Armenians have used every kit in the toolbox to try and accomplish the recognition of the Armenian genocide and obtain justice such as symbolic, monetary and territorial reparations. Yet after 105 years the responsibility of this calamity continues to be denied and justice withheld. Drawing on the literature developed by genocide scholars, this thesis investigates what genocide denial is, how it manifests in the Armenian case and denialist rhetoric’s consequences on the fight for justice and on descendants of the victims. To do this, young Armenian diasporans voices are centralized to conduct a thorough review of their interpretations of denial, the attempts to rectify justice lacking, and the future of this battle. As a result, the research finds that the systematic denial of the Armenian genocide and absence of justice has created a situation in which these painful memories have festered for years. It has concurrently been the glue keeping together the diaspora but while the demands for justice are loud, young diasporans admit the impracticality or even impossibility of justice.

Функции иноязычных вкраплений в интернет-дискурсе русскоязычных жителей Италии и Эстонии: сопоставительный аспект
(Tartu Ülikooli Kirjastus, 2025-02-12) Деци, Алессандра; Dezi, Alessandra; Костанди, Елизаветa, juhendaja; Kostandi, Jelisaveta-Kaarina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool.
