Abstract

Description

The Bachelor’s thesis “Radio news editing as exemplified by the news services of Eesti Raadio and Kuku Raadio“ focuses on the problems concerning processing and presenting good radio news. Nowadays, the concept of radio news immediacy has changed in connection with the triumph of online news channels. Radio is no longer able to be the fastest news communicator and it thus broadcasts news, which have already been evaluated, often in unedited form. Proceeding from the above, the main keywords of the thesis are radio news editing, radio news requirements, spoken language and radio news language, connections between radio news and online journalism, the change in the concept of radio news immediacy. The topic under consideration is unfolded as exemplified by two national talk radio stations. The empirical part of the thesis is based on the observation of the editorial staffs’ organisation of work carried out on two days, 20 and 21 April, and the analysis of the news that was broadcast. The author chose ethnographic observation as the observation method (Machin, 2002), which presupposes complete non-interference by the researcher with the processes observed. In addition to the observation, the author of the thesis carried out in-depth interviews at the news services of both radio stations and analysed the texts broadcast on the radio stations on two executive days. With regard to the latter, the author compared changing and editing the radio news texts with those of three important internet portals in Estonia – the news service BNS and the online editions of two of the biggest daily newspapers, Postimees and Eesti Päevaleht. The need to study the topic can be justified by the increase in the triumph of online portals especially in recent years. In connection with placing online news on the market, a question arises about the position of radio news on the media landscape. Can radio still be called the most immediate news channel and if not, should radio news change or should the concept of immediacy in connection with radio news change? Whether and to what extent does making a text auditive decrease the news immediacy? As a result of the present thesis, the hypothesis that radio news clearly lag behind online portals in the speed of news broadcasting was confirmed. At the same time, the other result of the thesis was the fact that the texts of radio news briefs are practically impossible to distinguish from news broadcast on online portals in the linguistic sense. In the course of interviews, it did become evident that news editors were aware of the main rules that must be followed in news editing, but in real situations, information is broadcast in practically the same form as it is presented to the editorial staff. The present thesis gives an overview of what takes place in the news services, and the time and resources invested in the news. The analysis performed using the combined method helps to determine the main drawbacks in the comparison of the immediacy of radio news with online channels and by doing this, fulfils the purpose of the thesis. The scope of the present thesis does not enable to make any fundamental conclusions about the matter, whether and to what extent the radio stations participate in ‘pack journalism’, or offer solutions, for instance, about which communication situations the radio news are most functional in (crisis communication, traffic news and local news of immediate nature). However, the present thesis is a good basis for writing an in-depth thesis.
