Abstract

Description

The title of written bachelor’s thesis is „Young Russians as TV-viewers: their viewing preferences in the context of Estonian television“. In the part of theoretical and empirical framework I firstly brought out the media consuming habits of Russians living in Estonia. I concentrated on traditional media. In separate subchapter I additionally concentrated on media consuming habits of Estonian Russians aged 15-19 years as they are the target group of given survey. Additionally I gave an overview of two Estonian public broadcasting TV programs: ETV and ETV 2. An overview of public broadcasting’s responsibilities was also given. In ideal public broadcasting should not be the only channel providing multicultural atmosphere, but in real life it is. Setting of the bachelor’s thesis’ problem and questions needing answers are also brought in the first part of the work. The purpose of this work was to understand the habits of television viewing in the context of young Russians living in Estonia and do habits have intercourse with the command of language. As author expands young Russians as future opinion leaders in their linguistic community and also in Estonian society in general, it is necessary to have common Estonian information space. The purpose of questions was to find out the viewing of Estonian television programs, the viewing of different formats from Estonian and Russian television programs and to find out information channels in the context of two countries, but also on the scale television versus Internet. The second part of bachelor’s thesis contains description of sample and chosen method of analysis. In the real sample there were 99 students from two school located in Tallinn and Tartu: Tartu Vene Lütseum and Tallinna Tõnismäe Reaalkool. Author carried out the poll by herself. The poll was in Russian. Additional to the description of the method of analysis, given part brings out mistakes and inaccuracies found from the poll. In the third part of given work the results of analyses can be found. The fourth part concentrates on discussion and inferences. Some of the results in bachelor’s thesis were logical outcomes – young Russians prefer Russian television programs in general, but also from the informational aspect. Out of Estonian TV programs most viewed are TV3, Kanal 2 and MTV Estonia. Surprisingly there is no intercourse or there is very weak intercourse between the command of language and viewing Estonian television programs, according to correlation. There is also a weak intercourse between the command of language and the language of the show and preferring the subtitles. From the analysis occurred that Internet was preferred information channel instead of television. No one prefers television to be the only information channel. It also occurred that students, who preferred rather Internet as information channel, view less news from television. Commercial television programs oriented on entertainment are preferred. While analyzing formats it occurred that actual formats handling public themes are also represented. The author of given bachelor’s thesis considers it to be important to continue studying the habits of consuming television. There are different possibilities and focuses how to help the integration process in Estonia.
