The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to investigate the transformative effect of a work of art on an individual in Schiller's theory of art. Schiller's theory of art has been chosen as the basis for the analysis of the transformative effect of art in this work because it is the first to attribute to art a comprehensive and positive effect on people. His approach to art connects aesthetic experience with human nature, freedom, and morality. This thesis focuses on Schiller’s 1975 work "Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man" where his aesthetic theory is most clearly evident. The study explores Schiller’s theory through two mutually complementary approaches to the treatment of aesthetics – the transcendental and the causal. The transcendental analysis, by examining the transhistorical structure of the subject, reveals the conditions of the possibility of beauty and their perfect realization – the ideal of beauty, which simultaneously constitutes a necessary condition for the ideal of humanity. The causal approach, in turn, investigates the possibilities for the realization of this ideal of beauty within the empirical world. Within this framework, the transformative effect of a work of art manifests in the individual as the emergence of an aesthetic state – a condition in which the person’s natural drives, the sensuous and the formal, are in perfect balance, enabling genuine freedom of choice. This state of inner harmony and freedom, represents, for Schiller the highest value of all.
Käesolev bakalaureusetöö uuris, milline on kunstiteose inimest transformeeriv mõju Schilleri kunstiteoorias.
