The study focuses on transcription factors Aire and FoxP3, their associations with the development of autoantibodies and clinical course of autoimmune diseases. Aire and FoxP3 are involved in the maintenance of self-tolerance. Association between the presence of certain types of autoantibodies and higher expression of FoxP3 in peripheral blood cells in type 1 diabetes was found in this study. Mutations in Aire gene are associated with the development of specific autoantibodies, including antibodies against TSGA10 and type 1 interferons, which may influence the clinical picture of the syndrome related to Aire-deficiency.
