dc.descriptionEstonian Year 9 English Examination candidates are increasingly prepared using Cambridge B1 Preliminary materials, yet it remains unclear whether these international preparation materials adequately cover the requirements of the national examination. This study investigates two research questions: to what extent are the reading tasks of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary and the Estonian Year 9 English Examination aligned with B1 level as presented in the CEFR, and to what extent are Cambridge B1 Preliminary materials suitable for preparing students for the Estonian Year 9 reading component. The literature review covers the historical development of the CEFR, the challenges of language proficiency assessment, the process of aligning examinations with the CEFR, the relevant reading descriptor scales from the CEFR Companion Volume (2020), and an overview of automated CEFR text analysis tools. The empirical analysis examines the reading tasks of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary practice test (2024) and the Estonian Year 9 Examination (2025). Three automated text analysis tools are used to assess text complexity, followed by a manual analysis of each task against the CEFR reading descriptor scales. Each task is evaluated on two levels: the linguistic properties of the reading text and the cognitive demands of the task itself. The tasks of both examinations are then compared and the findings discussed in relation to the research questions.
