Screams Among the Trees: the Creation of a Modern Gothic Horror Through Satanism, Black Metal and Norse Mythology in Adam Nevill’s The Ritual
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Kiis, Tõnu; Rajamäe, Pilvi, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
The present thesis aims to study how Adam Nevill’s The Ritual fits the Gothic genre by distinguishing the main themes and its constituent elements of terror and placing them within the context of Fred Botting’s Gothic. The main purpose of this thesis is to study how Adam Nevill has created his atmosphere of terror and therefore an original version of Gothic horror by combining elements not found traditionally in the Gothic genre. The main body of this thesis is divided into an introduction, a literature review, an analysis of Gothic elements in Nevill’s novel and a conclusion. The introduction gives a short overview of the author and what has influenced his writing, the general reception of the novel, a brief description of the structure of the thesis at hand, and finally a summary of the novel. The literature review provides the reader with a theoretical background and is divided into five subsections. The first subsection focuses on providing a theoretical overview of the Gothic genre and its many elements through Fred Botting’s Gothic. The second subsection gives a general overview of the sublime and the methods of its creation in literature based on Edmund Burke’s studies on the sublime. The third subsection provides the reader with a brief history and symbolism of Satanism. The fourth subsection gives an overview of popular bands, figures and activities associated with Black Metal. The fifth subsection provides information on the legends and traditions of Norse mythology. The second section analyses Adam Nevill’s The Ritual in light of the theoretical information provided in the literature review and its subsections correspond to the ones in the literature review. The main body of the thesis ends with a conclusion, condensing the main findings from the whole thesis into a summary. The abstract in Estonian will be provided at the end of the thesis in the résumé

The Hero’s Journey and Kishotenketsu in Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle: The Co existence of Story Structur
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Kiik, Laura; Leijen, Djuddah A. J., juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
In an increasingly globalizing world, we are exposed to different cultures and customs, including different storytelling techniques. However, a desire to identify or interpret stories through the lenses of a single encompassing model seems to exist in Western societies, which may result in a limited or false understanding of other cultures. Furthermore, as we tend to think and understand the world through stories, it is paramount that we do not only acknowledge the differences in perspective but also do our best to consider alternative ways of understanding the world to enrich our own personal thinking. As an attempt to explore and introduce two possible ways of telling a story and how they can productively co-exist, this thesis analyzes Hayao Miyazaki’s retelling of the British novel Howl’s Moving Castle through the Western Hero’s Journey and Japanese kishotenketsu, since the movie provides a compelling example of hybridized storytelling. The thesis begins with a general overview of the relevance of the topic and is followed by a more in-depth theoretical background of other related subjects. Later in the thesis, the movie is analyzed using the story structures in question and some further differences not directly connected to the models are discussed.

Translating Slang: a Comparative Analysis of Enn Veldi’s and TEA’s Estonian English Bilingual Dictionaries
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Kenk, Ahti; Torn-Leesik, Reeli, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
This BA thesis comparatively analyses the slang entry translations found in Enn Veldi’s Estonian-English dictionary and the TEA Estonian-English dictionary and aims to answer the following research question: How similarly are slang entry translations handled in Enn Veldi’s Estonian-English dictionary and the TEA Estonian-English dictionary? To answer this question, the thesis analyses all entries marked as slang in the dictionaries, 399 in total, to uncover the most common way of translating in the dictionaries, which in turn is used as the base to critically analyse the similarities and differences in slang entry translations in the dictionaries, alongside the positives and the problems that stem from different translations. The thesis starts with an introduction, where the author provides a short insight into bilingual dictionaries and slang, followed by the literature review, which discusses the topics of slang, bilingual dictionaries and translation from the points of various authors, with the aim of providing a background for the analysis both in the form of a slang definition as well as problems that have arisen in dictionary entry translations. The empirical study consists of an overview of the analysis, as well as the analysis itself, followed by the discussion on the findings. The thesis ends with the conclusion.

Corpus-based Content Analysis of British Right-Wing Newspapers’ Reaction to the BBC
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Järlik, Marge; Türk, Ülle, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
The purpose of this paper is to study the right-wing newspapers’ online versions’ reaction to the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) refusal to label Hamas ‘terrorists’ and instead use the term ‘militants’. The analysis examines how the newspapers are using this debate to undermine the BBC’s influence in the British public life. This is important because in the increasingly polarised world, these papers question the need for journalistic neutrality and objectivity. The methods and reasons with which the impartiality and the BBC position as the most trusted news provider is tested, should be investigated. The introduction gives a brief overview of the BBC and its Editorial guidelines. The conservative nature of the British media is also examined. The literature review will demonstrate why newspapers generally oppose the BBC, what are the main accusations against it and what research shows is the British media’s (including the BBC’s) stance towards Israel. The corpus-assisted content analysis is used to study articles from two newspapers: broadsheet the Telegraph and mid-market the Daily Mail. News pieces from one month period from October 8, 2023, to November 8, 2023 were selected.

Analysis of the Authorial Techniques Used by Stephen King in Misery (1987)
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Isok, Lohe; Rajamäe, Pilvi, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
Stephen King is a renowned contemporary author, who has published over fifty novels, many of them bestsellers, and who has pushed the thriller and horror genres into new heights. This thesis aims to locate and analyse different authorial techniques, like choosing narrative perspectives, establishing pace, and building suspense, to gain a higher understanding of King’s phenomenon and to aid future aspiring authors, literary critics, and researchers. The techniques are analysed in his 1987 psychological thriller Misery, and the analysis itself is based on theories and research done by literary critics and academics. To keep it concise, not all the aspects of writing are analysed, but the focus will lay on three major elements: the perspective; the pace; and the suspense. After introduction, the second part of the thesis introduces Stephen King and his importance in the literary landscape as well as the literary praise and criticism Stephen King’s writing has received from other critics and scholars. The second part analyses these elements by first establishing their core meaning, then finding examples of them used in Misery, and finally explaining how and why King has chosen to use them to elevate his writing. Finally, the fifth part concludes and summarises the thesis and theorises about the implications and possibilities of further research on this subject.

The adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes' character Professor Moriarty in the Japanese animated series Moriarty the Patriot (2020)
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Bligzna, Birgie; Rajamäe, Pilvi, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
Professor James Moriarty from Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes short stories has remained a popular research topic for years now, even though his appearance in those stories was quite brief. This popularity, however, has not been extended to his adaptations variants, meaning that there is a clear lack of an overview on how his character can be interpreted. This thesis focuses on the Japanese animation Moriarty the Patriot, an adaptation that stands out for its decision to put the focus of the story on Moriarty. The aim being to see how the adaptation has modified his motivations and the plotline of the short story The Final Problem when compared to the source material. The thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an analysis of the character and a conclusion. The introduction provides the background context for the thesis. The literature review provides a brief overview on the genre of adaptations and studies done into both Sherlock Holmes adaptations and Moriarty’s character. It also provides a brief overview of reviews on Moriarty the Patriot. The analysis section covers how Moriarty the Patriot works with the concept of adaptations, followed by a comparative analysis into Moriarty’s character and the adaptation of the short story The Final Problem. The conclusion provides a summary of the main findings of the thesis.

The Study of Space in T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land”
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Aruste, Liisbet; Marling, Raili, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
The thesis at hand thematically studies the variety of spaces depicted in T. S. Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land”. The aim is to analyze the role of experience in the construction of literary space and discover how that space functions according to the themes of the poem. The introduction gives an overview of the literary significance of “The Waste Land” and defines the scope of the thesis. The literature review discusses previous academic research about the poem, explains the background of modernist space, and provides the theories for the empirical analysis by outlining the major works of what has come to be called the spatial turn. The empirical part of the thesis first explains the combined methodology created on the basis of the theories by Yi-Fu Tuan and Edward William Soja. The following subchapters focus on the portrayal of physical and literary space within “The Waste Land”, in which the analysis of space is divided according to the five sections of the poem. The conclusion of the thesis presents the main findings of the analysis.

The Portrayal of Belonging and Unbelonging in David Chariandy’s Soucouyant
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Ärsis, Grethe-Ly; Rein, Eva, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
David Chariandy’s Soucouyant, published in 2007, deals with immigrant characters trying to make sense of their identity and where they belong. However, there has not been a study particularly about belonging and unbelonging and how these experiences may resemble or vary among the characters. The thesis explores the characters’ experiences and their similarities and differences. The aim of this study is to explore the belonging and unbelonging of the first-generation immigrant character Adele and her second-generation immigrant son, who is also the nameless narrator of the novel. The thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an empirical study, and a conclusion. The introduction gives a brief overview of the plot of the novel, its relevance in Canadian context and discusses the topics that are further explored in the thesis. The introduction also contains the aim of the thesis and the research questions. The first chapter is a literature review which gives an overview of previous research done on the novel, with a focus on topics such as identity and generation relationships, memory transmission, multiculturalism, and belonging and unbelonging. The second chapter, which is the empirical study, provides an analysis of both Adele’s and the narrator’s experiences and feelings with belonging and unbelonging. In addition, the similarities and differences of the experiences will be discussed. The conclusion provides a summary of the findings.

The Development of Biracial Identities in Zadie Smith’s Novel Swing Time and in the UK Today
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Allikas, Karolin; Türk, Ülle, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
This thesis aims to explore the development of biracial identities in Zadie Smith’s novel Swing Time and compare it to studies into and personal stories on the topic in the United Kingdom. The thesis leans on sociological and psychological studies on biracial identity development, comparing them to the fictional experiences of the two main characters. The thesis consists of an introduction, literature review, analysis and conclusion. Introduction fives a short overview of the topic and thesis; the literature review explores studies done on the topic as well as literature and real-life experiences. The analysis compares segments of the novel to studies and real-life experiences discussed in the literature review. An overview of the findings is given in the conclusion. By analysing the journey of the two main characters in the novel, this thesis delves into how they manage to find themselves, their place in society and how they shape their biracial identity. This comparison and close reading reveal the similarities and differences between real-world dynamics and literary depiction. The influence of family, community, and cultural attitudes on identity development, along with the intersections of race, class, and gender, are important areas of attention. The thesis emphasises the continuous process of identity development within a multicultural society, arguing that Swing Time not only reflects but also critiques and enhances our knowledge of mixed-race identity.

Obsession with language and act of communication in William Sydney Graham`s Poetry
(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Õunpuu, Annemari; Soovik, Ene-Reet, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond
The present thesis is aimed at analysing representation of language as facilitator and obstructor of communication in selected works of the Scottish poet W.S. Graham (1918-1986). Graham`s work has been mostly associated with Dylan Thomas and neo-romantics,and although praised by T.S. Eliot it remained largely unrecognised during his lifetime. It isonly within the recent decade and with the support of Nobel-winning British dramatist Harold Pinter that his work has become more recognised. The thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an empirical part, and a conclusion. The literature review gives an overview of the main themes and related critical perspectives in W.S. Graham`s works as discussed by scholars. The literature review provides a basis for the following empirical part. The empirical part of the thesis deals with creating the space for the communication act and language as mediator in three poems by W. S. Graham through close reading. The poems selected for the analysis are „The Constructed Space” (1958), “The Beast in the Space” (1970), and “What is the Language Using Us For?” (1974). The poems have been selected based on their representation of the development of Graham`s ideas on language throughout the years. The conclusion summarizes the main findings of the thesis.
