Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe thesis focuses on how the characters in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s challenge heteronormative ideas about sexuality. The thesis is divided into two main sections: literature review and the analysis. The first part discusses the previous work on Capote’s writing style and the queer aspects of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and explains how queer people were treated in the 1950s United States. The second section is divided into three parts: direct and indirect references to queerness, and references to sports which is used to emphasize how Capote’s characters do not conform to the societal expectations. Afterwards, the analysis is tied to Capote’s writing style to explain how he depicts his queer characters. The conclusion presents the major findings of the thesis. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondClimate change-related debates are ongoing in the UK media. The (re)election of Donald Trump as the US president motivated a rigorous critique of his views on climate change by the left-leaning UK media. Studying such debates is crucial as they influence people's perception of climate change. So far, there is little research on how left-leaning UK newspapers respond to Donald Trump’s sceptical views on climate change. Discourse metaphors provide a useful framework for studying climate change-related debates in the media, as they are often used as rhetorical tools, allowing an author to conceptually frame an issue in a preferred way. This thesis aims to contribute to the research on climate change representation in the UK media by analysing discourse metaphors used to conceptually frame Donald Trump in the leading UK newspapers. Relying on the Conceptual Metaphors Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980) and the work by Zinken et al (2008) on discourse metaphors, this thesis analyses metaphors used to conceptually frame Donald Trump in the context of climate change in the UK newspapers The Guardian and The Sun. Articles published in the period from Donald Trump’s presidential victory to his inauguration were read. Metaphorical expressions in the articles conceptually framing Donald Trump were identified and analysed using Critical Metaphors Analysis (Charteris-Black 2004). This thesis is divided into two sections. Section one establishes the theoretical background, defines relevant terminology, reviews relevant studies, and introduces the implications for this thesis. Section two provides a detailed description of the methodology used, reports the number and purposes of the metaphors analysed and discusses the findings.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Analysis of birds in Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Sokk, Maria; Talviste, Eret, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondKazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015) is a fantasy novel about an old couple’s journey across the land to find their son, which becomes a quest to find their memories and face their past. The thesis explores the meaning of birds in the novel, focusing specifically on memory studies and ecocritical theory. I argue that birds have symbolic and material relevance in the novel, which is connected to the main themes such as memory, environment and religion. The thesis consists of an introduction, two main chapters – the literature review and empirical analysis – and a conclusion. The introduction provides background for the thesis and gives an overview of the contents of the thesis. The aim of the thesis is also stated in the introduction. The literature review provides an overview of previous research. It focuses on articles that explore topics such as environment, metaphors, memory, and intertextuality in The Buried Giant. The second chapter consists of empirical analysis of the birds in the novel. It is divided into four parts. In the first sub-section, I provide examples from the novel to argue that birds symbolise transition. The second sub-section focuses on the depiction of birds at the monastery. The third sub-section discusses the three ghost-women who are resembling birds, and the last sub-section in this chapter focuses on the wren-eagle. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Autumn in the poems of Juhan Liiv: from Estonian roots to international translations(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Rouhiainen, Laura; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Kirs, Tanar, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis explores the translation of Juhan Liiv’s (1864–1913) poetry into English, focusing on nature imagery, especially autumn colors. The analysis covers two poems ‘Lehed lang’sid’ (1897) /‘Leaves Fell’ and ‘Sügise’ (1903)/‘Autumn’ from a collection of Liiv’s poetry translations Selected Poems in Estonian and English: Juhan Liiv (2024) by Jüri Talvet and Lee Harvey Hix. The aim of this study is to analyze how the inherently Estonian poetry of Juhan Liiv transfers to a very different linguistic and cultural system of the English language. The comparative analysis concentrates on both the formal features as well as the content of the poems with a special attention on the imagery connected to autumnal colors. The thesis consists of an introduction that provides a background on Liiv and the translation of his poetry, followed by a theoretical section conceptualizing poetry translation and Juhan Liiv’s poetry. The empirical section provides an analysis of the poems and a discussion of the translations. The thesis ends with conclusions where the results of the analysis are presented. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis explores the use of gestures in Belter Creole, a constructed creole language created for the science fiction series The Expanse. Belter Creole provides an opportunity to analyze the use of the resources of the English language within popular media and culture, as well as its connections to language politics and ideology. After establishing the necessary context through an overview of creole languages, constructed languages, and gesture theory, the gestures were then analyzed with a focus on gesture space, handshape, palm orientation, and co-occurrence with speech, if applicable. Although some gestures were difficult to analyze due to camera angles, the majority could be connected to comparable gestures in English-speaking cultures or known sign languages. The findings indicate that the gesture system of Belter Creole draws on existing practices, and thus contributes to the authenticity and immersion of the fictional universe of The Expanse. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe present thesis aims to study the phenomenon of pop culture driving a modern renaissance of classical culture by conducting a thematic analysis of fan discourse on the r/Hozier subreddit, a digital communication hub for fans of the Irish musical artist Hozier. The study aims to reveal how online fan communities contribute to the phenomenon and how analyzing the relevant discourse helps us understand it. The thesis includes an introduction, a literature review, an empirical study and a conclusion. The introduction provides background information on Hozier and his inspiration for the album Unreal Unearth (2023). The literature review introduces the academic literature on Hozier, fandom studies, and the social media platform Reddit. The empirical study covers the collection and pre-processing of data, as well as the thematic analysis of 27 posts and related comments in eight thematic subsections. The discussion of the findings and their implications is presented in a separate subsection. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis and considers possibilities for further research. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis paper analyses Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho to see how irony is used to present alternative meanings. It also aims to determine whether the irony that is used in the novel is postmodern. This thesis is predominantly structured around the works of two postmodern theorists - Linda Hutcheon and Fredric Jameson, specifically Hutcheon’s theories on traditional and postmodern irony, and Jameson’s critique of pastiche. The theoretical section gives an overview of postmodernism and irony. It also introduces the two main terms used in the analysis. In the empirical section, examples from the text are used to show how irony and pastiche are used in the narrative and to discuss whether or not the irony present in the text is postmodern. The thesis ends with a conclusion about the findings.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , British and American accent features in the pronunciation of Estonian learners of English(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Laiuste, Karl Mattias; Torn-Leesik, Reeli, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis examines how Estonian learners of English produce five phonetic features associated with Standard Southern British (SSB) and general American (GenAm). The features are rhoticity, t-voicing, and three vowel contrasts (PALM/TRAP, LOT/PALM, THOUGHT/PALM). The study also considers how students’ self-reported accent preferences align with their actual pronunciation. Fifteen first-year students at the University of Tartu were analysed through recordings of Arthur the Rat. Findings show that while students often favour one variety, their speech blends features from both. Rhoticity was the most consistently realised feature, while vowel contrasts showed the most variation. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe UT attracts hundreds of international students each year, which means that they make up a significant portion of our student body. It is thus relevant to study what intercultural communication issues they face while studying in Tartu. The main section gives an overview of intercultural communication, intercultural competences, and intercultural communication competences. The paper will also look at the UT as an international environment and what systems exist so far to support international students. This background discussion provides the framework for the empirical study in which I will first analyse the International Student Ambassadors’ blog page to see which type of content they provide and the extent to which it supports intercultural communication. To get the perspective of regular international students, a questionnaire was compiled to identify the challenges they are facing. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondPublished in 1993, Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s The Robber Bride and its divisive main antagonist, Zenia, continue to inspire lively critical discussion. Despite Atwood’s reservations about interpretations rooted in gender binaries, the existing research has primarily focused on Zenia’s status as a woman while overlooking frameworks like Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, especially his theory of the id, the ego, and the super-ego. Because of this, the thesis aims to demonstrate how Zenia aligns with the Freudian id and examine what this reveals about her function in the novel. The introduction provides a background on the previous reception of The Robber Bride, a brief summary of the novel, and an overview of Atwood’s views on feminist readings of her works. The literature review outlines the three main approaches to analysing Zenia in the previous scholarship and discusses the central concepts of Freud’s psychoanalytic model of the mind. The first three subsections of the empirical study examine excerpts from the novel to provide proof of Zenia functioning as the Freudian id, followed by a comparison of the findings of the id approach to those of previous interpretations of Zenia in the fourth subsection. The conclusion summarises the findings of the thesis. J., juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis explores representations of hegemonic masculinity and fatherhood in God of War (2018) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). Analyzing the father-child dynamics between Geralt and Ciri, and Kratos and Atreus, it examines how traditional masculine ideals of authority and emotional restraint are both reinforced and challenged. Drawing on Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity and trauma-informed perspectives, the study reveals how these games critique patriarchal fatherhood and propose alternative models emphasizing empathy and cooperation. This research contributes to understanding evolving masculinity in video game narratives. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondSocial stratification is a central aspect in Donna Tartt’s The Secret History and is largely conveyed through linguistic variation in character speech. This thesis compares the employment of idiolects, sociolects, and register in the novel and its Estonian translation by Liina Viires. As Estonia has a significantly different sociopolitical history and is a much younger literary language than English, this thesis hypothesises that the distinctions in character speech are less prominent in Estonian. The introduction provides a summary of the novel, an overview of its popularity, and insight into the elements which convey social stratification in the novel. The literature review provides theoretical background regarding the linguistic varieties of idiolect, sociolect, and register, how these varieties are used in character construction, and the possibilities and limitations of Estonian in their translation. The empirical section explains the methodology of the research and examines the use of linguistic varieties in both the original text and its translation. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe aim of this thesis is to analyse how the tree symbolism found in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and Katherine Mansfield’s ‘Bliss’ contributes to deviating from heteronormativity. The method of close reading is used to identify what specific role the tree symbolism plays in the lives of the main characters Orlando and Bertha. This thesis identifies a gap in the literature written about the texts and attempts to shed light on a specific area of research that could be done. The introduction gives a brief overview of Orlando, ‘Bliss’ and the time period the texts were published in. The first chapter focuses on previous literature written about the tree symbolism in Orlando and ‘Bliss’ to see what has already been found on the topic. The second chapter analyses the role of the oak tree in Orlando and the pear tree in ‘Bliss’ to show the emotional journey the characters go on to find their true self and how it is connected to nature.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , The Role of cuisine in shaping personal and cultural identity in Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Jüriöö, Annely; Talviste, Eret, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Romanistika osakondContemporary literature serves as a powerful tool for representing the experiences of marginalized communities. Min Jin Lee’s novel Pachinko centers around the Korean diaspora, with an emphasis on the everyday lives of Koreans and Korean immigrants in Japan during the 20th century. This thesis examines the portrayal of Korean cuisine in Pachinko with a specific focus on its importance in shaping and upholding the characters’ personal and cultural identities during the Japanese annexation of the Korean Peninsula and the subsequent migration of the characters to Japan. The thesis is divided into four sections: the introduction, the literature review, the empirical analysis, and the conclusion. The introduction positions Pachinko within the context of Asian American literature, particularly through the lens of postcolonial theory, and states the aims of this study. The first chapter contains a literature review that provides a concise overview of the interplay between food, culture, and politics, specifically in the context of colonialism, as well as the current research on the novel. The second chapter presents an empirical analysis of the novel, focusing on the importance of Korean cuisine in the story of Pachinko by examining its connection with the characters’ heritage, use of language, and as a source of empowerment. The conclusion summarizes the findings of the thesis.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Usage of Elements of the Early War ’Lie’ in Sassoon’s Late War Poetry(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Jürgenson, Armas; Rajamäe, Pilvi, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe First World War’s themes and topics are still topical in the light of modern conflicts in the world, as the concerns of the people who participated in the first world war have resurfaced again for example in Ukraine where very similar kind of trench warfare is going on. This thesis takes a look at the cultural influences at the start of the 20th century that coloured the way Siegfried Sassoon looked at his experiences at the Western Front and at the home front and how he arrived at his feeling of disillusionment and the reflection of this disillusionment in his war poetry. The thesis first looks at how the ideas concerning war were shaped by the Victorian chivalric revival of the 19th century that led to two million men volunteering in 1914-1916, the influence of war propaganda on the soldiers themselves and the home front which led to Siegfried Sassoon’s revaluing of his wartime experience in his poetry of 1916-1918. The thesis consists of two chapters. The literature review which is divided into three parts looks at society at the start of the 20th century and Sassoon’s upbringing, the start of the first world war in 1914 and Sassoon’s eager enlistment and from 1916 onwards his “Wilful Defiance of Military Authority”. The second chapter examines closely a selection of Sassoon’s war poems using the method of close reading in order to highlight how Sassoon uses the elements of early war propaganda in his antiwar messaging. The paper ends with a conclusion and the Resume in Estonian. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe aim of this study is to gain insight into the use of menstrual X-phemisms in American English with the assistance of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). This study seeks to determine which X-phemisms are used most frequently and in which contexts they appear. The expressions will be categorised based on the aspect of menstruation they reference. The first section of the thesis demonstrates how taboos influence language and explores euphemisms, dysphemisms, and orthophemisms. Additionally, this thesis covers prominent theories on the origins of the menstrual taboo and examines past research on menstrual expressions. The second section of the thesis utilises COCA to investigate 21 menstrual X-phemisms. Anglistika osakondThis thesis looks at the linguistic features that are used within American football whilst also comparing how such characteristics have been used before. A total of nine transcripts were taken and analysed to see if gridiron football commentary has gone through any major changes or if it has not really changed much over the years. The first part covers the language used in sports and their characteristics while also introducing the roles of the commentators and the differences between radio and television broadcasts that were used in the second part. Additionally, the first half of the paper takes a brief look at previous studies covering this topic. The second half of the paper compares several aspects, which were identified by previous studies and books on this topic.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Pre-Fortis Clipping by Estonian Learners of English: A Case Study(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Veerpalu, Kärolin; Torn-Leesik, Reeli, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondMany linguists, such as Jenkins (2000) and Celce-Murcia et al (2010) find that EFL learners must be taught pre-fortis clipping to avoid unintelligibility as pre-fortis clipping has proved not to come as naturally to EFL learners as for native speakers. The purpose of this thesis is to discover how Estonian learners of English produce pre-fortis clipping because it has never been studied in Estonian EFL learners before and pre-fortis clipping is not part of the Estonian sound system. A pronunciation test was conducted on three native speakers of English and ten Estonian EFL students. The results of the L1 Estonian students were compared to the ones of the native speakers. This thesis opens with an introduction which includes the incentive for writing this thesis along with the definitions of the main concepts. The first chapter focuses on the possible reasons pre-fortis clipping exists, the differences of pre-fortis clipping in American English and British English, gives an overview of the Estonian and English sound systems related to pre-fortis clipping, and explores previous studies on the topic. The second chapter presents the nature of the pronunciation test and the methodology along with a results section and a discussion of the results. The thesis ends with a conclusion that summarizes the findings of this present thesis.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of the filler so in the speech of Estonian EFL learners(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Varula, Romi; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondDiscourse markers (DMs) in speech have been extensively researched, particularly since the late twentieth century, with growing focus on DMs in learner language in recent decades. However, filler words in learner language have not been as vastly researched and thus, this thesis at hand aims to address this gap by contributing to a few studies made in Estonia so far. The thesis focuses primarily on the use of the filler so in the speech of Estonian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and native English speakers utilizing the Estonian subcorpus of the Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI-EST) and the Louvain Corpus of Native English Conversation (LOCNEC). Additionally, it aims to analyse whether so is used more as a filler, a conjunction or an adverb between the two groups. The introduction part of the thesis introduces the topic and corpora at hand, states the two research questions and gives an overview of all the sections of the thesis. The first part is concerned with previous studies conducted on both discourse markers and fillers in speech and how so functions as a filler, a conjunction and an adverb. The empirical section of the thesis gives an overview of the methodology, the corpora used in the study and analyses the use of so. The last part of the thesis discusses the findings based on the results gathered from the data. The conclusion answers the two research questions presented in the introduction and suggests possibilities for further research in similar field of study.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Translation of Offensive Language in Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Ületoa, Birgit; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondAnthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, first published in 1962, is a novel written in an artificial slang Nadsat, which largely comprises elements of Russian and Cockney rhyming slang. This thesis aims to analyse a specific aspect of Nadsat, offensive language, in connection with the protagonist Alex, and the translation of it since it can be a challenging task, especially when dealing with constructed slang, for translators to render impolite expressions that may appear stronger in written than oral form. The question this thesis seeks to answer is how Udo Uibo, the Estonian translator of A Clockwork Orange, has translated offensive Nadsat expressions and what implications his translation techniques could have on the portrayal of Alex in the Estonian version. The thesis consists of two parts, the first presents an overview of Nadsat and why the author has made Alex use this slang, continues with the discussion of the translation techniques used for rendering offensive language, and introduces previous works on the translation of Nadsat. The second part examines the translation techniques the Estonian translator has applied by comparing the English and Estonian texts as well as Nadsat glossaries. Additionally, the second partsuggeststhe implications Uibo’s choices might have on the portrayal of Alex in the Estonian translation.
