listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A Comparative Analysis of Vocabulary Learning Activities Used in Language Learning Applications Busuu and Speakly(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Karu, Laura Elisabeth; Zagura, Natalja, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondIn recent years mobile language learning applications have grown in popularity and there are many different options on the market for language learners. This thesis aims to show the different vocabulary learning activities the mobile language learning applications Busuu and Speakly use to help their clients learn English vocabulary. This thesis consists of an introduction, a literature review, an analysis of Busuu and Speakly, and a conclusion. The literature review focuses on vocabulary learning by looking at relevant articles and studies and also gives an overview of the literature and previous studies done on language learning applications. The second part of the thesis provides a comparative analysis of the activities for vocabulary learning provided in the applications Speakly and Busuu. This is done by viewing all the vocabulary learning activities that are available for A1 and beginner-level learners.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A comparison of the descriptions of characters: Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and its Estonian translation(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Sedrik, Erkki; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžFrom the perspective of the target culture a translator’s work on a novel could be regarded as impactful and often as crucial as one of the the original author. As characters form a part of a story world, it is important for the translator to stay as close to the source text as possible when describing them, because otherwise the original mental image created in the readers’ mind could change completely. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the two main characters Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson in Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet(1887) and its translation Etüüd Punases(2003) by Agu Tann in order to see whether the way the characters are portrayed will affect their character descriptions in translation. I will utilize Edward Morgan Forster’s concept of flat and round characters for categorizing and comparing the characters in the original and in the translation.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus based study of formulaic language use by native and non-native speakers(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Piiri, Andreas; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondAlthough language makes use of formulaic patterns, knowing and using these formulaic patterns of words can prove to be quite difficult for non-native speakers of English. Since knowledge on formulaic language can both improve learners’ comprehension and production of the language, it might be important for learners to familiarize themselves with these formulaic patterns. The aims of this thesis are to analyze whether or not non-native speakers use formulaic language more in their writing or in their speech as well as to compare the formulaic language use between native and non-native spoken language. Therefore a corpus-based analysis was conducted, which utilized the Tartu Corpus of Estonian Learner English (TCELE) for the written corpus, Loucain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI-EST) for the non-native spoken corpus, and Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE) for the native spoken corpus.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of like in Estonian EFL learners’ speech(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Konso, Johanna; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžPragmatic markers (PMs) are an essential part of conversation. However, with PMs such as like appearing everywhere, they are stigmatised as being only used for hesitation and therefore being meaningless. While definitely an important function of like, the word has a multitude of other uses that are prominent in speech. This paper hopes to disprove the common belief that like is only used for hesitation, as well as determine how different is the use of like in speech between Estonian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and native speakers. In order to answer that question, a corpus-based study was carried out, using the Estonian subcorpus of the Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI-EST) and Louvain Corpus of Native English Conversation (LOCNEC) respectively. While there have been theses written utilising the LINDSEI-EST corpus, PMs in Estonian EFL learners’ speech have received almost no attention so far.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of multi-word verbs in hip-hop(Tartu Ülikool, 2023) Levin, Mark Aaron; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituutlistelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of names in Lovecraft's fiction(Tartu Ülikool, 2019) Peedumäe, Ander; Veldi, Enn, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondIn the case of H. P. Lovecraft's stories the more important creatures can be divided between humans and monsters. The monster names in Lovecraft's texts have been subject to several studies, but it is apparent that the human names have not been thoroughly examined in the context of this particular story world. Thus, the main aim of this study is providing an analysis of character names with the use of collocations, etymology and semantic prosodies. This study focuses on higher social status as the possible key trait for human characters, since it could indicate positive sematic prosody within the context of Lovecraft’s writing.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of the filler so in the speech of Estonian EFL learners(Tartu Ülikool, 2024) Varula, Romi; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondDiscourse markers (DMs) in speech have been extensively researched, particularly since the late twentieth century, with growing focus on DMs in learner language in recent decades. However, filler words in learner language have not been as vastly researched and thus, this thesis at hand aims to address this gap by contributing to a few studies made in Estonia so far. The thesis focuses primarily on the use of the filler so in the speech of Estonian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and native English speakers utilizing the Estonian subcorpus of the Louvain International Database of Spoken English Interlanguage (LINDSEI-EST) and the Louvain Corpus of Native English Conversation (LOCNEC). Additionally, it aims to analyse whether so is used more as a filler, a conjunction or an adverb between the two groups. The introduction part of the thesis introduces the topic and corpora at hand, states the two research questions and gives an overview of all the sections of the thesis. The first part is concerned with previous studies conducted on both discourse markers and fillers in speech and how so functions as a filler, a conjunction and an adverb. The empirical section of the thesis gives an overview of the methodology, the corpora used in the study and analyses the use of so. The last part of the thesis discusses the findings based on the results gathered from the data. The conclusion answers the two research questions presented in the introduction and suggests possibilities for further research in similar field of study.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A corpus-based study of the polysemy of 'cheers' in American and British English(Tartu Ülikool, 2018) Saar, Signe-Renate; Klavan, Jane, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondKorpusepõhised uurimused on valdkond, mis annab hea ülevaate kindla valitud keele kindla keeleüksus(t)est. Käesoleva tööga püüan anda vaadet sõna cheers erinevatele kasutusvõimalustele Ameerika ja Briti inglise keeles. Mainitud sõna valisin sõna polüseemia tõttu. Polüseemia tähendab, et sõnal on mitu tähendust. Minule põhiliselt huvi pakkuv valdkond oli näha, kas ja milliseid erinevusi on sõnal inglise keele kahes põhivariandis. Näiteks soovisin ma teada saada, kas cheers’i kasutatakse tänuavaldusena rohkem Briti või Ameerika inglise keeles.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A Low’s Pentathlon analysis of translations of Estonian songs in the Eurovision Song contest(Tartu Ülikool, 2021) Lai, Raimond; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride kolledžThe translation of song lyrics is one of the more complex fields of translation. While translations of song lyrics are relatively rare compared to other types of translation, one of the common occurrences of them is in the Eurovision Song Contest. Using English translations provided by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), this study aims to identify issues and notable aspects of translating songs from Estonian to English. The translations are analysed using Low’s (2005) Pentathlon Principle and compared to the musical notation to reveal how the aspects of singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm and rhyme influence the performability of a translation. The EBU translations are then compared to sung translations to show how different approaches can produce considerably different results in terms of singability. The results of the analysis are used to exemplify how aspects like stress and rhythmic match have a considerable effect on the singability of a translation and how semantic flexibility can allow the translator to work within the limitations posed by the musical aspects of melody and rhythm.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , A Modern renaissance: a thematic analysis of fan discourse on Dante Alighieri’s Inferno in r/Hozier(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Olesk, Loona; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe present thesis aims to study the phenomenon of pop culture driving a modern renaissance of classical culture by conducting a thematic analysis of fan discourse on the r/Hozier subreddit, a digital communication hub for fans of the Irish musical artist Hozier. The study aims to reveal how online fan communities contribute to the phenomenon and how analyzing the relevant discourse helps us understand it. The thesis includes an introduction, a literature review, an empirical study and a conclusion. The introduction provides background information on Hozier and his inspiration for the album Unreal Unearth (2023). The literature review introduces the academic literature on Hozier, fandom studies, and the social media platform Reddit. The empirical study covers the collection and pre-processing of data, as well as the thematic analysis of 27 posts and related comments in eight thematic subsections. The discussion of the findings and their implications is presented in a separate subsection. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis and considers possibilities for further research. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondTranslation studies influence the promotion of intercultural dialogue between smaller languages and more widely spoken ones. This dialogue may aid in advocating towards cultural and linguistic diversity and preservation and possibly lead to a more connected world. The roughly 1.1 million native speakers make Estonian a small language, which might influence the availability of resources or hinder the filling of research gaps. This thesis studies the translation of the narrative method of stream of consciousness from English to Estonian. The source text is Mrs. Dalloway (1935) by Virginia Woolf and the target text Proua Dalloway (1998) by Riina Jesmin. This research inquires into the strategies the translation of Mrs. Dalloway uses to render stream of consciousness, as well as into the implications of linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target culture. The thesis consists of an introduction, which presents a short synopsis of the novel and what it is known for. The next chapter covers relevant literature about stream of consciousness, Mrs. Dalloway and translation theories. The empirical chapter studies the characteristics of the source text and analyses the target text on the backdrop of the literature review. The analysis will focus on the first and last two pages of the novel, featuring consecutive extracts from the source and the target text. The methods of close reading and structural analysis will be employed with some historical and cultural contextualization. J., juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis explores representations of hegemonic masculinity and fatherhood in God of War (2018) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). Analyzing the father-child dynamics between Geralt and Ciri, and Kratos and Atreus, it examines how traditional masculine ideals of authority and emotional restraint are both reinforced and challenged. Drawing on Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity and trauma-informed perspectives, the study reveals how these games critique patriarchal fatherhood and propose alternative models emphasizing empathy and cooperation. This research contributes to understanding evolving masculinity in video game narratives. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondA translator's work on a novel can be regarded as impactful and often times can be considered the item which could support the success of work. For that reason, translations should usually try to convey the meaning of the text, but also attempt to keep the original style and narrative tools in place. Attempting to keep those things intact could prove a challenge to translators for various reasons, and diverting from the original form can end the translation up with translational deforming tendencies, most famously listed by Antoine Berman. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the deforming tendencies visible in the translation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, specifically focusing on the journal entries of Jonathan Harker.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , An analysis of Johannes Aavik‘s visibility in translating Edgar Allan Poe‘s The fall of the house of Usher(Tartu Ülikool, 2022) Kähr, Aigar; Gielen, Katiliina, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThis thesis looks at the linguistic features that are used within American football whilst also comparing how such characteristics have been used before. A total of nine transcripts were taken and analysed to see if gridiron football commentary has gone through any major changes or if it has not really changed much over the years. The first part covers the language used in sports and their characteristics while also introducing the roles of the commentators and the differences between radio and television broadcasts that were used in the second part. Additionally, the first half of the paper takes a brief look at previous studies covering this topic. The second half of the paper compares several aspects, which were identified by previous studies and books on this topic.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , An analysis of the characters Crake and Jimmy/Snowman in Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel "Oryx and Crake"(Tartu Ülikool, 2018) Jussi, Joosep; Rein, Eva, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondTöö eesmärk on leida põhjendid Margaret Atwoodi romaani „Orüks ja Ruik“ tegelaste Ruiga ja Jimmy/Lumemehe tegudele. Vastust otsitakse küsimustele, mis oli Ruiga motivatsioon hävitada tsivilisatsioon ning asendada inimesed oma geneetiliste “lastega” ja mis olid Jimmy, hiljem Lumemehe peamised põhjused postapokalüptilises maailmas edasi elada.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Analysis of birds in Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Sokk, Maria; Talviste, Eret, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondKazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015) is a fantasy novel about an old couple’s journey across the land to find their son, which becomes a quest to find their memories and face their past. The thesis explores the meaning of birds in the novel, focusing specifically on memory studies and ecocritical theory. I argue that birds have symbolic and material relevance in the novel, which is connected to the main themes such as memory, environment and religion. The thesis consists of an introduction, two main chapters – the literature review and empirical analysis – and a conclusion. The introduction provides background for the thesis and gives an overview of the contents of the thesis. The aim of the thesis is also stated in the introduction. The literature review provides an overview of previous research. It focuses on articles that explore topics such as environment, metaphors, memory, and intertextuality in The Buried Giant. The second chapter consists of empirical analysis of the birds in the novel. It is divided into four parts. In the first sub-section, I provide examples from the novel to argue that birds symbolise transition. The second sub-section focuses on the depiction of birds at the monastery. The third sub-section discusses the three ghost-women who are resembling birds, and the last sub-section in this chapter focuses on the wren-eagle. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the thesis.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Analysis of queer themes in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s(Tartu Ülikool, 2025) Tamm, Aljona; Marling, Raili, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondThe thesis focuses on how the characters in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s challenge heteronormative ideas about sexuality. The thesis is divided into two main sections: literature review and the analysis. The first part discusses the previous work on Capote’s writing style and the queer aspects of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and explains how queer people were treated in the 1950s United States. The second section is divided into three parts: direct and indirect references to queerness, and references to sports which is used to emphasize how Capote’s characters do not conform to the societal expectations. Afterwards, the analysis is tied to Capote’s writing style to explain how he depicts his queer characters. The conclusion presents the major findings of the thesis. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Maailma keelte ja kultuuride instituut; Tartu Ülikool. Anglistika osakondStephen King is a renowned contemporary author, who has published over fifty novels, many of them bestsellers, and who has pushed the thriller and horror genres into new heights. This thesis aims to locate and analyse different authorial techniques, like choosing narrative perspectives, establishing pace, and building suspense, to gain a higher understanding of King’s phenomenon and to aid future aspiring authors, literary critics, and researchers. The techniques are analysed in his 1987 psychological thriller Misery, and the analysis itself is based on theories and research done by literary critics and academics. To keep it concise, not all the aspects of writing are analysed, but the focus will lay on three major elements: the perspective; the pace; and the suspense. After introduction, the second part of the thesis introduces Stephen King and his importance in the literary landscape as well as the literary praise and criticism Stephen King’s writing has received from other critics and scholars. The second part analyses these elements by first establishing their core meaning, then finding examples of them used in Misery, and finally explaining how and why King has chosen to use them to elevate his writing. Finally, the fifth part concludes and summarises the thesis and theorises about the implications and possibilities of further research on this subject.listelement.badge.dso-type Kirje , Analysis of the semantic development of selected equestrian terms(Tartu Ülikool, 2020) Saavan, Annie; Veldi, Enn, juhendaja; Tartu Ülikool. Humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide valdkond; Tartu Ülikool. Inglise filoloogia osakondThis paper aims to bring more attention to the understudied field of equestrian terminology. It studies the semantic change of 15 terms in equestrian specialty field which have been divided into two categories: ‘colours’ and ‘gaits and movements’. The purpose is to determine whether the terms originate from equestrianism or outside of the field, whether one of the categories is more likely to originate from either one of them, if the terms that originated in equestrianism have their meanings broadened outside of it, and processes of semantic change are identified.
