Re-presenting Ole Tobias Olsen's 'Norske folkeeventyr og sagn: samlet i Nordland'

Abstract

This multimodal translation of Ole Tobias Olsen’s Norske folkeeventyr og sagn: samlet i Nordland (1912) combines English translation, archival and original photography, ethnographic fieldwork, translation studies research, and archival research, in order to represent and re-present Olsen’s collection of Norwegian folklore to new audiences. The practical component consists of a website, nordlandfolklore.myportfolio.com, which presents translations of the tales, photography, creative writing, and historic information. The written component of this thesis documents the project process and outcome, in addition to contextualizing the product within themes such as early Northern Norwegian folklore collections, translation, photography and digital folkloristics.
