dc.descriptionThe bachelor theses of „Depiction of defence politics in Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees from november 2002 until the end of 2004“ concentrates on the question of diversity between the two competitive national daily newspapers – Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees. This study concentrates on the debate which took place in the Estonian press during summer and fall 2003. The main question of the debate was: should the Estonian defence forces cut down the numbers of conscripts and move towards a smaller but professional force which main purpose would be conducting peacekeeping and military operations with our NATO allies abroad? The Estonian Ministry of Defence plan to cut the yearly number of conscripts from 3000 to 1500 was criticised by common people, reserve-officers, analysts, a few officers in active duty and also by some journalists of severely weakening Estonias independent defence capability and was seen as a step on a way to a completely professional army. This bachelor study has two main purposes: firstly to find out which kind of arguments were use and by who during debate; and secondly to find out, how the usage of these arguments differed in Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees. Both the content analysis and the qualitative analysis showed that there is indeed a difference, how the subject and debate was depicted in Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees. Although both newspapers forwarded more argument that supported the changes, Eesti Päevaleht tended to be more critical towards the changes than Postimees. The pro-arguments in Postimees appeared more often and Postimees did not forward the arguments of Baltic Reserve Officers League as did Eesti Päevaleht. Although the most used arguments of this debate were similar both in Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees, it is also clear, that Eesti Päevaleht transmitted more different arguments against changes than Postimees. In conclusion – although there are several similarities between Eesti Päevaleht and Postimees in the depiction of defence politics, it’s clear that the existence of two competitive national daily’s does make the debate in this case more diverse.
