    University of Tartu Faculty of Philosophy Institute of Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Languages and Literatures Translation of “bad language” in Estonian subtitles of American films Master’s Thesis Mari Kirss Tartu 2014 The purpose of this thesis is to study how cursing has been translated in the Estonian subtitles of American films and how often has “bad language” been omitted from the translation. In this thesis the term “bad language” is used to denote the kind of language which can be referred to as cursing, profanity, obscenity, and so on. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of previous work done in Estonia in the field audiovisual translation and cursing in audiovisual works. The second chapter deals with bad language: how to define it and how it differs from neutral speak. The third chapter describes cursing in English and in Estonian. The forth chapter presents the methods used to analyze the source and target texts, and the data. The analysis showed that there were several cases when bad language had been omitted from the translation. However, most of the time it was a justified translation strategy. The analysis also revealed that the most frequently used curse words in the translation of the American films do not match with the ones heard most often in the Estonian film.

    Laura Oll Patricia Cornwelli raamatu „The Bone Bed“ seitsme peatüki tõlge ja tõlke analüüs Translation and analysis of seven chapters of Patricia Cornwell’s book „The Bone Bed“ Master’s thesis 141 pages 2014 The aim of this master’s thesis was to translate seven chapters of Patricia Cornwell’s crime novel „The Bone Bed“ and analyze the usage proper nouns and medical vocabulary used in the novel. The analysis was divided into two major parts, first of which was dedicated to different proper nouns found in the novel. The analysis included opinions of different translation theorists on whether translation of proper nouns is necessary and how they should be translated. This part included examples of different American enterprises and institutions and also some names that the author had made up. The problem with the names of different enterprises was whether or not they had accepted translations in estonian, and if not, then how they should be translated. Since the novel „The Bone Bed“ is a crime novel about a medical examiner, the plot has a lot of medical and criminological terminology. Therefore, the second part of the analysis was dedicated to different translation problems concerning medical and criminological vocabulary. In this part the aim was to make the terms as easily understandable as possible for the average reader. It can be concluded that the present master’s thesis dealt with problems concerning the translation of proper names and different medical and criminological vocabulary. The aim was to provide the reader with a simple and understandable translation.

    Hanna Kitt Shannon Hale'i teose „The Goose Girl” kolme esimese peatüki tõlge ja tõlke analüüs Translation of the First Three Chapters of the Novel “The Goose Girl” by Shannon Hale and Analysis of the Translation Master’s thesis 2014 85 pages The aim of this Master’s thesis was to translate three chapters from the book „The Goose Girl” by the American writer Shannon Hale. The translation is accompanied by the analysis which examines the problems that occurred during the process and provides possible solutions for them. The analysis is divided into two parts. The first chapter of the analysis deals with problematic words and phrases and offers possible solutions to the mentioned problems. It became evident from the analysis that it is not always possible to transfer the meaning into the target text by using exactly the same words that occur in the source text and it is better to find a word or phrase that functions in the target language. On the other hand, there were instances when exact word-for-word translation was the best option. Often the suitability of the word-for-word translation is determined by how something is expressed in the culture of the target language. The second chapter of the analysis focuses on figures of speech which were difficult to translate. They include a metaphor and a pun, some similes and personifications. The author’s original way of writing has remained in the centre of all examples provided. Similes were approached by taking a look at some translation theories and the structure of a simile. Both viewpoints were helpful in finding a better translation equivalent, wording and structure for the sentences. The first aim in translating a simile was to retain the figurative essence while preserving its shape was of secondary importance. It became apparent that it is possible to preserve a simile by making only a few small changes – that was the case in five cases out of seven. On the other two cases the simile was replaced with a figure of speech and with a phraseological expression. In translating metaphors I demonstrated the use of different translation strategies. There were three instances of personification and one pun that presented difficulties. I have listed the possible translation equivalents and reasons for choosing the equivalent used in the target text. The analysis of pun translation resulted in realising that despite the fact that a pun-word has the same meaning in both languages, it is not possible to rely on the meaning simply by using the same pun-word in the target text: Accompanying words often provide additional meaning. Therefore it was not possible to transfer the pun into target language word-for-word. The solution was found in transforming the meaning in a way that is characteristic of the target language. It can be concluded that most of the problems occurred due to the style and expressive words and phrases that characterize fiction. It became clear that in order to 85 retain the meaning of an expressive text, it is often necessary to incorporate a few small changes.

The theoretical part also covers the aim of this glossary, sources that were used to compile it and problems that occurred during the process. The main challenges concern creating terminology and their definitions. The last part of the thesis presents a glossary, which contains 301 English terms with explanations. The choice of terms is largely based on the show jumping rules set by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. The terms cover show jumping subdivisions, such as rules for organising event, competition venues and equipment.

    The title of this Master‟s thesis is The Translation of Ancient Greek Participles into German, French and Estonian: A Contrastive Analysis. The original idea for this study comes from the personal sense of great discrepancy existing between the use of the participle in Ancient Greek and modern languages. Comprehending the use and function of the participle is perhaps one of the biggest challenges in studying Ancient Greek, hence an in-depth analysis into the translation of the Ancient Greek participle would provide an ample source of examples, how it has done in already pre-existing translations. The choice of adding German and French, next to my native Estonian, to the analysis was linguistically-motivated, and one of main points of interest for this thesis has is to look, how linguistically different languages deal with this problem. The initial hypothesis was that French, being a primarily analytic language (thus furthest apart from Ancient Greek in linguistic properties), would have greatest difficulties in conveying the original form of the Ancient Greek participle, whereas Estonian, a primarily synthetic language, would find it easiest. The corpus comprises of 300 Ancient Greek participles from three different classical authors. The sources of the participle are the fourth book of The Histories by Herodotus, Second Philippic by Demosthenes, and Phaedrus by Plato. Upon compiling the corpus, two principles were used: firstly that each source text would be of a different genre (thus the corpus consists historical narrative, a public speech and a philosophical dialogue); and secondly that the translations into target language would have a different author every time, yet more or less remain to the same time period. For Herodotus, I use the translation of Theodor Braun in German (1958), Philippe-Ernest Legrand in French (1945) and Astrid Kurismaa in Estonian (1983); for Demosthenes, the translation of Wolfhart Unte in German (1985), Maurice Croiset in French (1925) and Janika Päll in Estonian (2006); for Plato, a rework of Schleiermacher's translation in German (1953), translation of Leon Rubin in French (1961) and Marju Lepajõe in Estonian (2003). Following the introduction, this paper is structured into four parts – 1) general properties of the participle, both in Ancient Greek as well as in the target languages, 2) methodology of the study, 3) analysis of the corpus and 4) conclusion. The full corpus has been added as appendixes for future reference. On the general properties of the participle it was revealed that the definition of the participle largely depended on the source language of the definition as the concept would always be explained via source language examples. Still, certain general properties can be discerned – an non-finite verb form with the functionality of an adjective that nonetheless retains some characteristics of the verb (in example: the possibility to take an object, the expression of aspect and voice, etc). Another universal characteristic is its complete productivity – any verb can be made into a participle. Ancient Greek has morphologically distinct participial forms in four different tenses – the present, future, aorist and perfect. It also expresses the category of voice, as there exists a morphological difference between active, medial and passive voice (in several tenses, the two latter voices form a combined medio-passive voice). The grammar books on Ancient Greek offer many different approaches to the syntactical function of the participle. The categorisation used in this paper is largely based on William Goodwin's A Greek Grammar which makes a distinction between three major uses of the participle – attributive, circumstantial and supplementary use. In staying true to modern terminology, I have replaced “circumstantial” with “adverbial” and “supplementary” with “predicative” use of the participle. Other grammar books were also consulted – Bronemann and Risch's Griechische Grammar in German; Lukinovich and Rousset's Grammaire de Grec Ancien and Bertrand's Nouvelle Grammaire Grecque in French – and a brief compendium on the different approaches has been included. Keeping in mind the actual occurrence of participial uses and the translation techniques applied, I made certain adoptions to Goodwin's system – thus in the analysis of part three, there is an additional distinction between the substantive use of the participle (a subcategory of attributive participle, according to most grammar books) and genitivus absolutus (a subcategory of circumstantial/adverbial participle according to Goodwin). All three target languages have two morphologically distinct participial forms – the present and part participial form. Estonian participle also expresses the category of voice which does not exist as a morphologically distinct form in German and French. The main difference in the syntactic use of the participle between Ancient Greek and target languages lies in its predicative use, as one of the main uses of the participle in modern languages is predicative as a part of compound tenses. Yet Ancient Greek seldom employs compound tenses. Another problem lay in finding a modern-language counterpart for the adverbial use which was not that explicitly present in target language grammars. Arrivé et al in La grammaire d’aujourd’hui makes use of the term "apposition" and this term was used in the subsequent analysis to express target language participial use equivalent to Ancient Greek adverbial use. Attributive use was largely unchanged, although various limitations did exist in target languages individually. A brief glance was also necessary to the concept of non-finite verb forms in general, as other non-finite verb forms would sometimes an equal value to the participle in the quantitative analysis. This includes the gerundive forms in Estonian and French and infinitive forms in all three target languages. The methodology of this paper employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis – the qualitative analysis describes the translation techniques of every participle in all three languages. The general techniques were: translation with a participle; translation with other non-finite verb forms; translation with an adjective; translation with a noun (phrase); translation with a clause; and omission. Each technique also had its set of subcategories: for instance, a participle could be an attribute, substantive or an apposition; a noun phrase could be described as simple or complex etc. One of the key principles in describing the translations was an attempt to limit the description to the translation of the participle exclusively – for example, if the original participle functioned as a substantive and also had a complement, the translation of the complement was not described. The quantitative analysis is based on Eugene Nida‟s concepts of formal and dynamic equivalence and this paper attempts to measure the relation of every translation to these two concepts from the perspective of grammatic accuracy. Two separate criteria are observed in this analysis – does the translation retain the original word class and the original syntactic structure? To properly measure this, I created a five-point grading system, where the lowest value would be grammatically most accurate. Thus a 1 point translation retains both the original word form and syntactical structure, 2 point translation changes either the word class or the syntactic structure, 3 point translation changes both the word class and the syntactic structure, 4 point translation creates a new clause, 5 point translation omits the participle. The word class is retained only if the translation uses a non-finite verb form. The syntactic structure depends on the original category of the participle – a substantive participle can syntactically either the subject, object, indirect object or adverbial; the attributive participle can only be a compound; the adverbial and predicative participle and genitivus absolutus can only be an apposition. A series of examples have been added to illustrate this grading system. The results of the quantitative analysis revealed the initial hypothesis to be largely incorrect – contrarily to the hypothesis, it was French that proved to be grammatically closest to the original (overall value of 3 points on the grading system), followed by Estonian (3.12 points) and German (3.36). It is remarkable, however, that in terms of separate texts, the ranking of the languages' was different in every occasion – thus for Herodotus the ranking was French (2.99), Estonian (3.69), German (3.85); for Demosthenes Estonian (2.76), French (3.13), German (3.4); and for Plato German (2.59); Estonian (2.83); French (3.02). Although certain tendencies did seem to be language-specific (for instance, French always had a relatively low score in the category of adverbial participles and German in the category of substantive participle), the formal characteristics of the language were far outweighed by the decisions of the translator. There did exist an interesting correlation between the genre of the text and the grammatical accuracy of the translation – in almost all of the categories, the translations of Plato's philosophical dialogue were closer to the original, whereas historical narrative of Herodotus warranted a looser approach. Whether this is sheer coincidence or a more general trend, would require further study.

    UNIVERSITY OF TARTU Institute of Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Languages and Literatures Kadri Sibrits Lastekirjanduse kultuurispetsiifika tõlkemeetoditest Charles Dickensi romaani ,,Oliver Twist” kahe eestikeelse tõlke näitel On Translation Methods of Cultural Specificity in Children’s Literature: Two Estonian Translations of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Master’s thesis 2014 90 pages This thesis explores the translation methods that can be implemented to translate cultural specificity in children’s literature. The main objective is to determine if and how such methods contribute to the general aims of translating children’s literature. In addition, the translators’ presence in translation texts is analyzed. The thesis is comprised of three parts: Introduction, a theoretical chapter and an empirical chapter. In the introductory chapter, a theoretical framework is set for understanding children’s literature as a concept as well as the facets of its translation. A definition is provided and topics such as the main aims of translating children’s literature and the ambivalence of children’s literature texts are explored. In addition, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens is discussed as an example of children’s literature. The second chapter focuses on cultural specificity and features the definition of the term, followed by the categorization of the possible translation methods of culture-specific elements in children’s literature. Works of Javier Franco Aixelá, Vinay and Darbelnet, Vlahhov and Florin, Peter Newmark, Eirlys E. Davies and Göte Klingberg are taken as a basis for establishing a categorization of translation methods for conducting the comparative analysis of the translations in question. Translator’s presence and visibility are also discussed. In the third and final chapter, the two Estonian translations of Dickens’s Oliver Twist by Hans Freimann (1927) and Koidu Reim (1964) are compared in terms of translating culture-specific elements in children’s literature. The comparative analysis is conducted following the system of translation methods established in the second chapter. In general, the translation methods for culture-specific elements include word for word translation, paraphrasing, loan words, near equivalents, intra-textual and extra-textual gloss. Translating for children adds the consideration for possible ways to adapt cultural contexts. The author of this thesis refrains from prescriptive normativity; instead, the aim is to see which methods were implemented and how each translation contributes to achieving the main objectives of translating children’s literature, such as providing the child with information about the world and its different cultures and assisting the development of the child’s self-image by supporting the child in overcoming his or her fears and problems. The exercises given are aimed to help the students to obtain three basic techniques of simultaneous interpreting that the thesis focuses on: split attention/concentration, anticipation and speech editing. The reason for choosing memoQ 2013 R2 was the availability of a free 1-year license to the students of the University of Tartu. The first chapter gives a general overview of CAT tools, including their historical development, operating principles, modern features and products. The advantages and disadvantages of using this type of technology are also discussed. The second chapter focuses on the importance of teaching CAT tools in university translator training programmes and gives a short overview of the European Master’s in Translation project, as well as the current situation of teaching CAT tools in the translator training programmes of Estonian universities. The third chapter comprises a sample study plan for teaching memoQ 2013 R2 to translation students at the University of Tartu. The study plan is composed of four parts. The first three parts include exercises and tips for mastering the basic functions of memoQ 2013 R2. The exercises are based on processing legal and technical texts in memoQ; more specifically, the texts are different versions of two particular documents, one in each field. As the field as such is extremely broad, this thesis will focus on comparing the use of various linguistic instruments used for creating cohesion and coherence, as well as hedging. The comparison involves corpora from two universities (University of Tartu and MIT) and relies on computer based text analysis. The thesis consists of five main parts. The introductory part gives a short overview of the aims of the author. Chapter 1 contains the discussion of the key concepts of the thesis and the difficulties involved in defining them. Chapter 2 offers an overview of the field of comparative rhetoric and also introduces similar studies that have been carried out before. Chapter 3 introduces the methods used in conducting the analysis for this thesis and contains discussion on the results reached. The conclusion is a short summary of the aims and results of the study carried out for this thesis.

AASTAL AJALEHES SIRP ILMUNUD TÕLKETEOSEARVUSTUSTE PÕHJAL Estonian Translation Criticism Based on Reviews of Translated Works in a Cultural Weekly Sirp in 2012 Master’s Thesis 2014 78 pages Annotation: The present Master’s thesis studies translation criticism in Estonia as a part of translation history. There are quite many aspects influencing the study of translation history and translation criticism, one of the most important of which is the fact that there are no generally accepted criteria for writing translation criticism in Estonia. The empirical part of the thesis is comprised of reviews of translated works published in a cultural weekly Sirp in 2012. The selection consists of 50 book reviews. Yet not all of them can be considered translation criticism—there are only 11 reviews that can be considered translation criticism (the translation is examined thoroughly), which makes only 22% of all the reviews. Also, there are quite many reviews where there are no references to the translation—19 articles or 38% of all reviews. The thesis is followed by 6 appendices which contain different statistical data about the empirical material. Translation criticism as a part of translation history is a field that has not been studied very thoroughly yet, but which is essential for translators in order to get feedback to their work. It is important to have generally acceptable criteria for writing translation criticism so that criticism would not be too subjective (which it often is). The present thesis brings out some criteria for writing translated book reviews and the author hopes that they are useful for formulating criteria for translation criticism in the future.     Eero Vakker Filmi järeltootmise inglise-eesti valiksõnastik English-Estonian Glossary of Film Post-Production Master’s thesis 2014 80 pages keywords: film, post-production, glossary The objective of this masters's thesis is to compile an English-Estonian glossary on the subject of film post-production. The subject matter is divided into two parts: concepts of technical nature and of film poetics and aesthetics, with a major emphasis on picture and sound editing. The compilation of the glossary was based on the organisation of concepts rather than finding equivalents to the terms of the source language. Since there is a substantial lack of Estonian terms in film in general and especially in modern post-production, the author of this thesis set out to try and form new terms and make them as transparent as possible. The glossary is organised alphabetically, all synonyms are cross-referenced and more references have been provided in the definition section of the sense unit, to provide an even better overview of the concept.

    Kristi Uibokand Euroopa Liidu ametlike dokumentide eestikeelsetes tõlgetes esinevate probleemide analüüs Analysis of the problems related to the Estonian translations of the official documents of the European Union Master’s Thesis 2014 121 pages Keywords: European Union, legal acts of the European Union, translation process, translation mistakes, translator education The objective of the Master’s Thesis “Analysis of the problems related to the Estonian translations of the official documents of the European Union” was to find out whether the users of the official documents of the European Union (EU) are satisfied with the quality of the Estonian translations of the EU official documents, or not. Other purposes were to find out main problems that are related to the Estonian translations and to propose some solutions to improve the situation. For that purpose the author carried out a survey, the main target group of which were the Estonian officials. The title of the survey was “Satisfaction with the Estonian translations of the EU official documents” and this survey consisted of 14 questions. There participated 30 persons in this survey. The results of the survey are analysed in the first chapter. In brief, it could be said that most of the participants thought that the quality of the Estonians translations are rather good than bad.

(magistritöö) 2014 Lehekülgede arv: 137 The dictionary compiled in the framework of this MA project introduces 319 terms used in English texts in connection with Japanese management and business culture. As Japanese business culture has characteristic features and cultural nuances that need to be understood by those coming into contact with Japanese companies in the business context, this dictionary aims at explaining the cultural and linguistic aspects of relevant terms, with particular emphasis placed on the use of Japanese terms in English. The MA project comprises and introductory part, in which the main characteristics of Japanese management and business culture, the role of the Japanese language in English, the compilation process and principles of the dictionary and the problems encountered are outlined. This is followed by the dictionary, in which the terms are provided with definitions in English, example sentences and, in the case of Japanese terms, with the headword in Japanese script and an explanation of its literal meaning and structure, where relevant. The dictionary is based on various books and articles on Japanese business, glossaries found online as well as some corpora.

Although news are translated from Russian, Finnish, German and other languages, the main focus of this thesis were the news that have been translated from English to Estonian. The reason is that the biggest amount of translated news originate from English websites. The analysis was motivated by the fact that hundreds of news stories are translated every day and they reach thousands of people, thus the quality of the news should be very good. As there are frequent complaints concerning the quality of translated news, the author decided to investigate the problem further. The thesis is divided into two major parts. The first concentrates on why it is important to translate news, why did the author choose Postimees Online and Delfi, and why we should pay attention to the language that is being used in the news stories. In connection with that, the author of this thesis also examined how the language of news is regulated in Estonia and what exactly is Clear Writing and how to apply it when writing news. The second part of the thesis is the analysis of different news. The author analyzed about 100 news articles during 11 months and chose 40 translated news for further analysis. The findings were divided into 11 categories. Among those categories were Vocabulary, Translation Mistakes, Misprints and Sentence Construction. The analysis was sentence-based, since there were good and bad examples in many translated news. The thesis could be useful for news agencies because based on the analysis of translated news, the leaders of the news agencies could analyze their employees work and make necessary changes so that, if needed, the quality of translated news would improve.

    Hendrik Koger Ayn Randi teose Atlas Shrugged kolmanda osa seitsmenda peatüki esimese poole tõlge ja tõlke analüüs Translation of the First Half of Chapter 7 of Part Three of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged and an Analysis of Said Translation Master’s thesis 2014 The aim of this paper was to translate a segment of John Galt’s speech as well as a portion of text preceding the speech, both contained in chapter 7 part three of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. The transaltion is accompanied by an analysis in which I mainly approach the problems related to translating philosophical terms as well rendering names and stylistic peculiarities of the author’s writing from English to Estonian. The introduction consists of some background information about Ayn Rand, her work and philosophy. In this part I have offered a potential genre definition for Atlas Shrugged and stated reasons why I chose to translate this specific piece. In the second part I present an overview of my translation strategy in which I address the goals set forth in the strategy. The section includes a detailed description of my approach to translating philosophical terms — a strategy encompassing my own subjective analysis of the terms and choosing the appropriate equivalent based on fixed equivalents obtained from dictionaries and various philosophical publications. I shall also provide a loose theoretical basis for my strategy designed to achieve a hybid of communicative and semantic translation. The third part offers a concise roundup of difficulties concerning translation of the language of philosophy and shows why translating philosophical terms can be a formidable task. This is also the lenghtiest part of the thesis, including a thorough translation-related analysis of nine philosophical terms that serve as key points of the philosophical speech in Atlas Shrugged as well as of reasons to why some specific terms were chosen over others in certain contexts. Example sentences from both languages are also included in the analysis of each term. The fourth and final analytical section of the thesis involves possible solutions for translating the title of the novel, comparing with each other the existing translations of the title in several languages such as Estonian, English, Russian, German, French and Spanish. I also argue why I chose domestication over foreignisation when names were concerned and how I chose to approach the problems of rendering some stylistic elements of the author’s writing — such as the use of italics and dashes — into Estonian. 58 The thesis has shed some light on the problems and solutions concerning translation of philosophical terms and on the process of translation when choosing equivalents. In the thesis, several philosophical terms were analysed and potential differences between seemingly identical terms in meaning were offered, hopefully providing a guidepost for future translators to consider.
