Abstract
Description
This study examines how the content of the sportsmagazine Sporditäht has changed during
1992-2004. I chose Sporditäht because it´s the only consistently existing sportsmagazine in
Estonia and no such research has been done before.
There were two main research questions: which news values criteria are more important in
Sporditäht and how the content of Sporditäht has changed. Researching the sports media and
pointing out the weaknesses is very important because media as a socialising factor influences
people´s sporting habits and therefore also their health.
In my study I used three-level content analyse. I encoded 219 texts picked from ten magazine
volumes, two volumes from years 1992,1995,1998, 2001 and 2004 each.
The results confirmed one of my main hypotheses stating that the most important news values
criteria are fame, conflict and physical and mental proximity. The least important criteria are
extraordinarity and freshness. My second hypothesis proved wrong – proximity is not
becoming less important, but on the contrary - more important.
Most of my hypotheses that included changes in the contents of the magazine proved correct.
Not enough attention is being paid to youth sport and health sport. The magazine concentrates
on professional sports and especially on male athletes. The most drastic result was that
alongside 168 male authors there was only one female author in the selection. I find it
interesting that women occur more often in the pictures than in the verbal text. The most
frequently represented sports were basketball, football and track and field taking up
approximately half of the contents of the magazine. There is a tendency that the relevance of
local sports is increasing.
