Abstract

Description

Pille Rõivas’ bachelor’s thesis “Media Coverage about Estonia in 2007 and 2008 based on weekly reviews of foreign ministry” examined how Estonia is viewed in the weekly overviews of foreign journalism on the homepage of ministry of foreign affairs. Keywords are: Media Coverage, Estonia, Estonian foreign ministry, weekly reviews. The list brought out is definitely not complete due to the limits of human abilities, yet, it gives quite a good overview of how Estonia is seen in foreign media. In the reviews, there were in total 2123 articles about Estonia. Pursuant to events taken place in 2007 and 2008, one could presume the popularity of some topics. Undoubtedly, the most popular topic on both years was Relationships with Russia and its popularity still rose due to the events in April 2007. Accordingly to the chart of socially near countries, one could presume a bigger media reverberation about Estonia by certain countries which was also confirmed by this given analysis. Estonia is reverberated more by Finland, France, Russia, England, Germany, and USA—mostly by regional newspapers. In France, the most active reverberator is a news agency where active reverberation about Estonia is made by Estonian foreign journalist Anneli Rõigas (Reigas). Considering the events taken place in Estonia (events in April 2007 and the burst of real estate bubble also known as economical crisis), Estonia was quite equally reverberated positively, negatively, and neutrally. During the two years the differences in tonality were only one or two per cent. Even so, the reverberations about Estonia can be considered as positive—despite the fact that the reverberated topics might have been negative by nature, the attitude towards Estonia was mostly positive. Estonia is displayed as progressive technological country where NATO cyber protection centre was just set up and Estonian unique nature and the old town of Tallinn are also highly praised.
