Current thesis uses a quantitative research method, a content analysis to map the month
of March 2009 in national newspapers - Eesti Päevaleht, Postimees and Õhtuleht - about
talking about history and referring to it. Data is collected based on the coding guide.
Coding guide used in the thesis was created in cooperation with the research group of
cultural theory in journalism (Halliki Harro-Loit, Ene Kõresaar, Anu Pallas, Valeria
Jakobson, et al). In addition to this thesis, the guide is also used in a more extensive research
to the media, which looks at the Estonian media while taking into account anniversary
journalism.
In that time period, of articles that were published in paper edition of said newspapers,
139 fit into the categories of the coding guide. These articles were taken as the analysis
units and as the basis of statistics. Of these 50 were opinion stories, 67 short news, 28
extended news, 13 feature articles and 15 interviews.
Most of the speakers were either journalists or part-takers. Sources were eyewitnesses
and Estonian press. Most of the places, that were mentioned, were in Estonia. The historical
period that was mentioned the most were the 1940s, 1980s and 1990s.
A lot of the articles that fell on said time period were about a person, an anniversary or a
book. Also there was remembering of a recurring anniversary, like the anniversary of
deportation or the day of mourning. In reporting the events that took place in March
2009, the constructing of collective trauma could be noticed. Postimees was the newspaper
that especially emphasized the horrors of deportation. The amount and emotionality
of articles in Eesti Päevaleht and Õhtuleht were lower.
While relying on the book by Eviatar Zerubavel, “Time Maps”, I looked into the articles
in Estonian newspapers, that talked about history, and while comparing them to other
historical accounts, I found out that also our media creates “black holes”, periods, where
seemingly nothing happened.
