Abstract

This master's thesis examines the possibilities and limitations of using historical photographs of Estonian folk costumes in the study, reconstruction, and wearing of traditional dress. The research problem focuses on how such photographs can be critically interpreted as historical sources and what added value they offer compared to material and textual evidence. The aim of the thesis is to develop a practical guide for folk costume makers and wearers to analyze historical photographs.
