THE VALUES OF ESTONIAN YOUNG PEOPLE IN 2002-2008, BASED ON DATA FROM THE SURVEY: ME. THE WORLD. THE MEDIA The aim of this thesis is to analyse data gathered in the research Me. The World. The Media and describe the values of Estonian young people aged 15–29 and the biggest shifts taken place in these values in the period of 2002–2008. The general value judgements and orientations of the young people have been studied. The research Me. The World. The Media was conducted on three years – in 2002, 2005 and 2008. In all these years, the questionnaire, made up of 25 value indicators, was used. Young respondents were asked to estimate each value in the 5 point scale (1 – “not imprtant at all”, 5 – “very important“). The measured single values are viewed individually and as part of the Schwartz system of values in this paper. The analyse of single values is basing on the comparison of the arithmetical means of the scores given to the values by the young people. Ranking of the singel values, based on their arithmetical means is given, thus illustrating the shifts in the hierarchy of values. The results reveal that the average of the average scores given to single values has been dropping, year after year. In 2002, the young people exhibited a more positive attitude towards all value statements, including the top values of all years, than in 2005 or in 2008. The biggest droppers among single values in the past six years were: technical development, freedom, clean environment, salvation, equality, social recognition, power. The top values of all years in the order of relevance: health, solid family and happiness. At the end of the ranking, come in the reverse order of relevance: technical development, social recognition, salvation, power. Comparison of the ranking of single values gathered in the first two years with the scores of the survey Me. The World. The Media gathered in 2008 reveals that in general, all three surveys overlap in the top and bottom values ranked by the young people. This paper did not find proof to the tendency of individualization of the values of the young people. The summarized average of the individualistic values shows a dropping tendency, while the average scores of collective values have remained more or less stable. Speaking of the Schwartz system of values, the values of Estonian young people are located on the side of Collectivism, Openness to Change and Self Transcendence. Similarly, this thesis did not find proof to the inclination of young people’s values towards hedonism. On the basis of the last survey Me. The World. The Media, hedonistic values show a dropping rather than a rising tendency. In terms of Inglehart’s process of post-materialization, post-modern values prevail in the young people’s hierarchy of values in all three surveys.en
