The aim of my thesis was to investigate which philosophical themes appear in the fragment “Communism of Spirits”, which authors were the inspiration for these themes and how Hölderlin develops these themes further in his later work. In the main part of my thesis I gave an overview of the authors and questions relevant to the formation of German idealism, then turned to Hölderlin’s philosophy of absolute idealism, his theoretical fragments and concentrated on the fragment „Communism of Spirits“. I argued that “Communism of Spirits” should be conditionally considered as authored by Hölderlin. In the third part of the study, I highlighted and analyzed the philosophical themes present in the fragment “Communism of Spirits”, which I found to be educational institutions, the distinction between form and matter, and spirit. I found Schiller’s work “Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man“ to be an inspiration for Hölderlin in writing the fragment. I then compared Kant’s and Schiller’s conceptions of beauty and related them to Hölderlin’s critique of the playfulness of beauty and his call to transcend Kant’s conception of beauty. From this, I concluded that the connection of Kant’s and Schiller’s aesthetics with Plato’s aesthetics was the inspiration for the creation of the fragment. In the last subsection, I demonstrated how “The Oldest Systematic Program of German Idealism” and “Hyperion” further develop the themes reflected in “Communism of Spirits” to show how Hölderlin’s philosophy is characterized by the connection of the social and the metaphysical.en
