Abstrakt

Käesolev bakalaureusetöö käsitleb prantsuse mõtleja Georges Bataille’ kulutuse mõistet. Bataille rakendab kulutuse mõistet erinevate valdkondade analüüsimiseks: kunsti, erootika, majanduse, poliitika, religiooni ning antropoloogia. Mõiste analüüsi läbi esitlesin Bataille’ kriitikat kasulikkuse mõiste vastu ning selgitasin kulutuse mõiste toimimise põhimõtteid. Kulutuse mõistet analüüsides tõusevad esile probleemid, mis esmapilgul demonstreerivad antud mõiste nõrkuseid, kuid lähemal analüüsil lahenevad nüanseeritumaks kulutuse käsitluseks.

Kirjeldus

The aim of this thesis is to explore Georges Bataille’s notion of expenditure. Expenditure is one of the central topics in Bataille’s works and therefore a fruitful start to understand these works. I began with an overview of Bataille’s life and through that situated him into cultural-temporal place out of which these ideas sprung up from. I followed it up with the analysis of the notion of expenditure. Through the analysis I explained how Bataille thought that expenditure was the opposite of utility, how anthropological studies might show that the foundations of our social structures are based on expenditure, how we became individuals through goal-oriented expenditure, and how we can truly experience the world only through experiences of self-loss which can be achieved through eroticism and religion. Finally, I tackled two main criticisms of Bataille’s works. First criticism is based on the confusion between expenditure and consumption. Other criticism is based on confusion over what Bataille tries to do with the notion of expenditure. Both criticisms have valid ground and therefore useful in bringing out the nuances of this topic.
