Rauno Veri’s bachelor thesis aims to explore the experiences and expectations of the users of the electronic functions of the Estonian ID card and its derivates. The main conclusion of this study shows that similarly to quite big differences between the users and non-users of the ID card, the experiences and expectations of the users are also very different. As there are people who use their ID card ten times a day, there are also people who use it once a month. There was also one person among the informants who has given up using the ID card. The second important conclusion shows that once the starting problems have been surmounted, further usage of the ID card is rather easy. Hence, the number of the card users could be increased by helping the non-users to take the “first step”. Thirdly, introducing the ID-authentication as a “valuable innovation” has proved to be quite successful. Based on the examples of Everett M. Rogers, the author emphasises a hypothesis that the increase of distant ID-authentication could be achieved by adjusting it to people’s lives by learning about their interests, needs and possibilities. The author also aims to analyse the effect of the fact that the ID card was introduced in Estonia as a compulsory personal identification instrument without passing the natural process of adoption of an innovation. This type of implementation has created a mind-set among the people of not connecting the ID card with one’s personal needs. Expounding on the abovementioned problematics can possibly reveal a number of practical aspects which can help to understand the propagation of the ID-authentication and its new domains, where this technology could prove to be useful to people.
