Abstrakt
This Master’s thesis aims to identify the primary reasons for the continued manual production of camouflage nets despite the existence of industrial alternatives. The study introduces the complexities of net weaving from an insider perspective, highlighting the underlying craft-scientific foundations. The research describes why and how functional nets with concealing, visually distorting camouflage effects are handmade, comparing their efficacy with industrial counterparts, and exploring the motivations and benefits for the volunteers involved. In addition to the producers' perspectives, the study incorporates feedback from the target groups and examines the specific social or emotional returns volunteers receive for their contribution. Furthermore, the thesis describes the impact of relocating a long-term volunteer site and the peripheral activities that have emerged alongside the purposeful actions of a specific camouflage nets weaving community in Tartu. The analysis is conducted at both the individual and community levels, while acknowledging the significance of these activities for national defense
